It can be recommended for a service it no longer provides. It can be associated with an old location. One AI model can understand the business correctly while another places it in the wrong category.

That creates a problem that a visibility percentage alone cannot explain.

I call it the AI Understanding Gap.

What Does an AI Visibility Audit Measure?

There is no single industry standard for an AI visibility audit.

Different tools and companies measure different things, but most audits are trying to answer some combination of these questions:

Does AI mention your business?

How often does it mention you?

Does it recommend you?

Which competitors appear instead?

Is your website cited as a source?

What other sources are influencing the answer?

What is your share of voice compared with competitors?

Is the information AI provides accurate?

Is the sentiment positive, neutral, or negative?

Can AI systems access and interpret your website?

That information can provide a useful picture of your AI visibility.

If customers are increasingly asking AI systems questions that used to go directly into a search engine, knowing whether your business appears in those answers matters.

The problem begins when visibility is treated as the entire picture.

It isn’t.

Being Visible to AI Is Not the Same as Being Understood by AI

Imagine two businesses.

Business A appears in eight out of ten relevant AI answers.

Business B appears in only three.

Based strictly on visibility, Business A appears to be in the stronger position.

Now look at what the AI systems are actually saying.

ChatGPT describes Business A using services it stopped offering two years ago. Claude places it in the wrong business category. Gemini associates it with an old location and fails to recognize one of its most important current services.

Business B appears less often, but when it does appear, the description is accurate.

Which business has the healthier AI presence?

There isn’t a useful answer unless you separate visibility from understanding.

I have written about this distinction before because being visible to AI is not the same as being understood by AI.

A mention tells you that the AI knows something about the business.

It does not tell you what the AI thinks the business actually is.

The AI Understanding Gap

The AI Understanding Gap is the difference between what a business actually is and what an AI system concludes that business is.

That gap can be tiny.

It can also be enormous.

A model may know your business name, location, website and general industry correctly while still misunderstanding your specialty.

It may know several individually accurate facts and combine those facts into an inaccurate conclusion.

It may recognize an old version of your company better than the company that exists today.

Or it may have enough conflicting information that its answer changes depending on the question being asked.

That is why I don’t think AI visibility should be treated as a simple visible or invisible measurement.

There are several very different states hiding behind the word “visible.”

Five States of AI Visibility and Understanding

1. Invisible

The AI system does not meaningfully recognize the business or surface it when relevant.

This is the clearest visibility problem.

If a prospective customer asks for businesses like yours and the AI never identifies you, there is very little ambiguity about what happened.

You were not part of the answer.

2. Visible and Accurate

The AI recognizes the business and describes it reasonably accurately.

Its understanding of your services, category, market, location and other important characteristics generally matches reality.

This is what most businesses probably assume visibility means.

Unfortunately, visibility alone does not establish accuracy.

3. Visible but Incomplete

The AI knows the business but only knows part of the story.

Perhaps it recognizes your original service but not the service that now produces half your revenue.

Maybe it understands your consumer business but not your commercial division.

Maybe it knows what you sell but not who you serve.

Missing information can reveal quite a lot about AI’s understanding of a business, especially when the same omission appears across multiple models.

The business is visible.

The picture is simply incomplete.

4. Visible but Contradictory

This is where things get particularly interesting.

ChatGPT says one thing.

Claude says another.

Gemini reaches a third conclusion.

Or one model produces different interpretations depending on how the question is phrased.

The business is unquestionably visible, but there is no stable understanding of what the business actually is.

That can happen because AI systems find conflicting information about businesses across websites, directories, articles, business listings, reviews, social platforms and older material scattered across the web.

It can also happen because the models themselves do not work from identical information.

That is why ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can describe the same business differently.

5. Visible but Wrong

This may be the most dangerous state because visibility can make the situation look healthy.

The AI knows the business.

It talks about the business.

It may even recommend the business.

It is simply wrong about something that matters.

Maybe the company moved and its old location remains online.

Maybe the company changed direction and AI did not fully follow the change.

Maybe an old service is still strongly associated with the business.

Maybe the model has confused two businesses with similar names.

Or perhaps nearly every fact in the answer is technically correct, but the conclusion those facts create is wrong.

A visibility score can look perfectly healthy while all of this is happening.

Four of Those Five States Are Visible

That is the part I think deserves more attention.

Only the first state is truly invisible.

The other four can all produce AI mentions.

Three of them can involve a business being regularly mentioned while something important about the AI’s understanding is incomplete, contradictory or wrong.

That means increasing the number of mentions does not necessarily solve the underlying problem.

As I have discussed before, more mentions do not automatically mean AI understands your business.

You first need to know what problem you actually have.

What Does an AI Visibility Audit Tell You?

A good AI visibility audit can answer important questions.

It can establish whether your business appears for relevant prompts.

It can show which competitors are appearing when you are not.

It can identify sources influencing AI answers.

It can measure changes over time.

It can reveal whether your visibility differs across platforms or categories.

Depending on the methodology, it may also identify inaccurate information and technical issues that could affect how AI systems access your content.

If your question is:

“Are we showing up in AI answers?”

An AI visibility audit is a logical way to investigate it.

But suppose your question is:

“What do these AI systems actually believe about our company?”

Now you are asking something different.

Visibility Measures Presence. Understanding Examines Interpretation.

This distinction matters because AI does not simply retrieve a business record and repeat it.

An AI system can gather pieces of information from different places and use those pieces to construct an answer.

Your website may say one thing.

A directory may contain older information.

A news article may describe an earlier version of the company.

Review sites may emphasize one part of the business.

An old press release may connect the company with a service that no longer exists.

AI has to make sense of all of it.

That is why AI can know individual facts about a business but miss the bigger picture.

The resulting answer is an interpretation.

And interpretation is what I am interested in.

Why I Compare ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini

One AI model cannot show you whether there is agreement.

If ChatGPT describes your business accurately, that tells you something useful about ChatGPT.

It tells you nothing about Claude.

It tells you nothing about Gemini.

The differences become visible only when the models are examined side by side.

One may strongly recognize your specialty while another barely associates it with your business.

Two may agree on your category while the third interprets you differently.

One may surface outdated information that the other two appear to have moved beyond.

Those disagreements are not noise to be averaged into a score.

The disagreement itself is information.

That is why I analyze three AI models rather than treating the output of one system as representative of AI as a whole.

Do You Need an AI Visibility Audit or an AI Understanding Analysis?

It depends on what you are trying to learn.

If your primary question is whether your business appears in AI generated answers, how frequently it appears, how that compares with competitors, and which sources influence those appearances, an AI visibility audit makes sense.

If your primary question is whether ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini correctly understand what your business does, how they categorize it, what they miss, where they disagree, what outdated information persists, and what incorrect conclusions they have reached, you are asking an understanding question.

A business may need either one.

It may need both.

They are not competing measurements because they diagnose different parts of the problem.

Why I Created the AI Business Understanding Report

I created the AI Business Understanding Report around the second question.

I wanted to know what happened after AI found a business.

What did it conclude?

Did the three major models agree?

Did they understand the company’s current services?

Did they recognize its specialty?

Were they carrying old information forward?

Did they confuse the business with another company?

Were important parts of the business completely absent?

And did the individual facts they knew add up to an accurate picture?

Every report is analyzed by hand across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. I compare the models, look for agreements and disagreements, identify missing or outdated information, examine incorrect assumptions and document what I find.

There is no automated visibility score because that is not what I am trying to measure.

The finished report is a written record of what those three systems currently understand about the business and where that understanding appears to break from reality.

You can see exactly how the process works before deciding whether that is the question you need answered.

The Question to Ask Before Trying to Improve AI Visibility

There is nothing wrong with wanting more AI visibility.

If your business belongs in relevant AI answers and is absent from them, that matters.

But before trying to increase something, it is worth understanding what you are increasing.

If AI already has an incomplete, outdated or incorrect understanding of your company, greater visibility could simply give that misunderstanding more opportunities to appear.

So start with two separate questions:

Can AI find and surface my business?

And then:

When it does, does it understand my business correctly?

An AI visibility audit can help answer the first.

The second requires looking beyond whether your business appeared and examining what the AI actually concluded.

Because being invisible is a problem.

Being highly visible for the wrong version of your business can be a problem too.

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@graph": [
    {
      "@type": "WebPage",
      "@id": "https://frankmasotti.com/insights/what-is-an-ai-visibility-audit/#webpage",
      "url": "https://frankmasotti.com/insights/what-is-an-ai-visibility-audit/",
"name": "What Is an AI Visibility Audit?",
"description": "An AI visibility audit examines whether and how a business appears in AI-generated answers.

It isn't.

There isn't a useful answer unless you separate visibility from understanding.

That is why I don't think AI visibility should be treated as a simple visible or invisible measurement.

There are several very different states hiding behind the word "visible."

Missing information can reveal quite a lot about AI's understanding of a business, especially when the same omission appears across multiple models.

Three of them can involve a business being regularly mentioned while something important about the AI's understanding is incomplete, contradictory or wrong.

"Are we showing up in AI answers?"

An AI visibility audit is a logical way to investigate it.

But suppose your question is:

"What do these AI systems actually believe about our company?"

Did they understand the company's current services?

["GET
