Does it recognize the correct services, location, specialty, audience, and attributes? Does it distinguish the business from competitors and similarly named companies? Does it describe the business accurately? And when someone asks for a recommendation, does the business appear to be a reasonable choice?

Those questions matter because people no longer have to visit a search engine, scan a list of websites, and research every company themselves. They can ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and other AI systems to do part of that work for them.

That changes what a business needs to know about its presence in search.

AI Search Is Not Just a List of Links

Traditional search usually gives the person searching a set of results to investigate.

AI can do something different.

Someone can ask:

“Who would you recommend for this?”

“Tell me about this company.”

“What businesses provide this service in my area?”

“Is this company a good choice for what I need?”

“How does this business compare with its competitors?”

“What is this company known for?”

Instead of simply returning a list of pages, an AI system can construct an answer.

That answer may describe businesses, compare them, summarize their services, identify perceived strengths and weaknesses, discuss reputation, make distinctions between competitors, or recommend particular providers.

The business is no longer represented only by its website title and description.

It can be represented by what the AI concludes about it.

That is the environment an AI Search Engine Audit examines.

What Does an AI Search Engine Audit Examine?

There is no single universal AI Search Engine Audit methodology.

Different audits can examine different systems, questions, measurements, and signals. Some focus heavily on mentions and citations. Others track how frequently a brand appears for a collection of prompts. Some compare visibility against competitors.

My work focuses on another part of the problem: what AI systems actually understand about the business they may be describing or recommending.

That includes questions such as:

Does the AI recognize the correct business?

What category does it place the business in?

What does it believe the business does?

Which products or services does it associate with the business?

What attributes does it associate with the company?

What does it appear to believe the business is known for?

Who does it think the business serves?

Does it understand the business’s location or service area?

Does it recognize important specialties?

Does it surface old or outdated information?

Does it confuse the company with another business?

What important information does it omit?

Which competitors does it associate with the business?

Under what circumstances might it recommend the business?

What appears to make the AI uncertain?

Do different AI systems reach the same conclusions?

A business can look perfectly clear to the people who run it while producing very different answers to those questions.

That difference is what makes an audit useful.

An AI Search Engine Audit Is Not an SEO Audit

An SEO audit and an AI Search Engine Audit investigate different things.

An SEO audit normally examines factors that can affect performance in traditional search engines. That can include crawling, indexing, page structure, internal links, backlinks, content, keywords, metadata, technical problems, and rankings.

An AI Search Engine Audit is not a replacement for that work.

It asks a different question.

Instead of asking:

“How well is my website optimized for search?”

it asks:

“What do AI systems conclude about my business when someone searches by asking them questions?”

A business can rank well in Google and still be misunderstood by AI.

It can also have a technically excellent website while AI systems rely on conflicting, incomplete, or outdated information from elsewhere.

The two types of audits can therefore uncover completely different problems.

AI Search Engine Audit vs. AI Visibility Audit

AI Search Engine Audit and AI Visibility Audit overlap, but the terms can emphasize different parts of the problem.

An AI Visibility Audit commonly examines whether a business appears in AI generated answers and may measure things such as mentions, citations, recommendation frequency, competitors, share of voice, or visibility across prompts.

Those are useful measurements.

But appearing in an answer does not establish that the answer is accurate.

A business can be visible and misunderstood at the same time.

It can be mentioned frequently for a service it no longer provides. It can be associated with an old location. Its primary specialty can be missing. One AI system can understand the company correctly while another reaches a substantially different conclusion.

That is why I use AI Search Engine Audit as a broader way of looking at the business inside AI mediated search.

Visibility is part of the picture.

Understanding, interpretation, comparison, and recommendation behavior are part of it too.

Why Understanding Comes Before Recommendation

Before an AI system can make a useful recommendation about a business, it needs some understanding of what that business is.

Suppose someone asks for a local company that specializes in a particular service.

An AI system that does not associate your company with that service has little reason to include you.

Suppose it recognizes the service but associates your company with the wrong geographic area.

Again, that can change the answer.

Suppose it knows your company, location, and services but misunderstands the kind of customer you serve.

That can change the recommendation too.

This is why recommendation visibility cannot be separated completely from business understanding.

If AI has built the wrong picture of the business, the recommendation problem may begin before the recommendation is ever made.

Why One AI Model Is Not Enough

There is no single AI answer about a business.

ChatGPT may understand a company one way.

Gemini may emphasize something different.

Claude may recognize information the other two miss.

They can agree on the basic business category while disagreeing about specialties. Two can recognize a current service while the third appears to rely on an older picture of the company. One may recommend the business confidently while another barely recognizes it.

Those differences are useful evidence.

That is why my methodology compares ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude independently rather than treating the answer from one model as representative of AI as a whole.

The same structured questions are asked across all three systems. Each question begins in a fresh conversation without previous conversation context, and no model sees another model’s answers.

The result is a multi model comparison rather than a collection of unrelated AI searches.

Agreement can reveal where the business appears to be clearly understood.

Disagreement can reveal where the picture becomes unstable.

Both matter.

Why I Do Not Reduce the Audit to One Score

A single score is attractive because it is easy to understand.

It can also hide the most useful information.

Imagine that your business receives an AI visibility score of 82.

What does 82 tell you about whether Claude has the wrong location?

What does it tell you about Gemini failing to recognize an important service?

What does it tell you about ChatGPT associating an outdated attribute with the business?

What does it tell you if all three models recognize the company but disagree about what it specializes in?

Not much.

Those are qualitative differences, and compressing them into one number can remove the evidence a business owner actually needs.

I would rather show what the systems said, compare the answers, identify the patterns, and explain what those patterns mean.

How I Conduct an AI Search Engine Audit

My approach is manual.

I do not enter a business name into an automated scanner and accept whatever score it produces.

Each business is evaluated individually across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude using a controlled question set.

The models are evaluated independently. Questions begin in fresh conversations. I do not provide the model with the company’s website, marketing copy, or a description telling it what the business is supposed to be.

That would defeat the purpose.

The goal is to discover what the model can determine without being coached toward the correct answer.

The original responses are preserved. If a model is uncertain, wrong, incomplete, or unable to identify something important, I do not correct it and try again until I get a better answer.

That failure is part of the evidence.

I then manually compare the responses for patterns involving business recognition, category, services, attributes, reputation, customer fit, competitors, recommendation behavior, omissions, outdated information, uncertainty, and disagreements among the models.

You can read the complete AI Business Understanding Report methodology to see how the evaluation is performed.

What Can an AI Search Engine Audit Reveal?

Sometimes an audit confirms that the AI systems have a strong and consistent understanding of the business.

That is useful to know.

Other times, the findings are less comfortable.

The models may recognize the company but misunderstand its specialty.

They may know the company by an older version of the business.

They may associate it with services that are no longer important while missing newer ones.

They may disagree about the company’s market position.

They may confuse similarly named businesses.

They may know many accurate facts but combine them into an inaccurate conclusion.

They may describe the company reasonably well when asked directly about it but fail to surface it when someone asks for a recommendation.

They may also reveal something the business owner never thought to test.

That is one reason I do not begin with the assumption that every audit will uncover the same problem.

The purpose of diagnosis is to find out what is actually happening.

Who Should Consider an AI Search Engine Audit?

Not every business needs one immediately.

It becomes particularly useful when customers, clients, buyers, partners, or other decision makers are likely to research the business through AI.

It can also be useful after a meaningful business change.

A company may have changed its name, moved, added or discontinued services, entered a new market, changed its positioning, acquired another business, rebranded, or evolved substantially from the company described by older information online.

An audit can also make sense when a business owner simply does not know what AI systems currently say.

That uncertainty is becoming more important as AI moves into the research and decision process.

You do not have to wait until you know something is wrong to look.

AI Search Engine Audits for Different Types of Businesses

The questions that matter can change depending on the business.

A plumber may care heavily about service area, emergency services, specialties, and whether AI recommends the company for a specific problem.

A dentist may need AI to understand procedures, location, patient fit, professional reputation, and areas of practice.

A law firm can have an entirely different set of concerns involving practice areas, jurisdiction, attorney reputation, client fit, and the kinds of legal situations for which the firm may be considered.

A real estate agent may need AI to correctly connect the individual agent with a brokerage, geographic market, property types, specialties, and professional identity.

Manufacturers, agricultural businesses, professional services, local contractors, and other industries create their own variations of the same underlying question:

What does AI understand about this particular business when someone uses AI to search?

I maintain an expanding collection of AI Search Engine Audit examples by business type. As new industries are evaluated and added, that category serves as the current directory rather than requiring every individual industry article to be continually updated.

What an AI Search Engine Audit Does Not Tell You

An AI Search Engine Audit should have boundaries.

My analysis does not claim to measure every AI system, every possible question someone could ask, or every answer that will ever be produced.

It does not predict traditional search rankings.

It does not promise that an AI system will recommend a business.

It does not produce a permanent score for something that can change.

And it does not establish that an answer observed today will remain identical tomorrow.

AI systems change. Their information access changes. Businesses change. Information around those businesses changes.

An audit is therefore a dated diagnostic.

It documents what the systems demonstrated under the conditions used during the evaluation.

That is evidence you can work from.

What Should You Do After an AI Search Engine Audit?

Do not begin by changing everything.

Begin with what the audit actually found.

If all three models misunderstand the same service, that deserves attention.

If only one model surfaces an old location, that is a different problem.

If the business is described accurately but rarely considered in recommendation questions, that requires a different investigation from basic identity confusion.

If conflicting information appears to be contributing to the problem, identify the conflict before rewriting pages at random.

The response should follow the diagnosis.

That is the reason I use the phrase:

Diagnosis before prescription.

There is no universal list of ten changes that every business should make after an AI audit.

The next step depends on what the evidence shows.

Can You Check This Yourself?

Yes.

You can open ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude and ask what it knows about your business.

That can be useful.

But one question to one model is not an audit.

The answer can change depending on how the question is phrased. Previous conversation context can influence a response. Different models can reach different conclusions. A direct question about your company can also produce a very different result from a recommendation, comparison, category, reputation, or customer fit question.

A structured audit controls more of those variables and gives you responses that can actually be compared.

The difference is not whether you are allowed to ask AI about your own business.

Of course you are.

The difference is between checking an answer and conducting an analysis.

The Frank Masotti AI Business Understanding Report

The Frank Masotti AI Business Understanding Report is my manual approach to this kind of analysis.

I evaluate one business at a time across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude and document what the three systems recognize, infer, associate, misunderstand, omit, and potentially recommend.

The finished report compares their answers, identifies agreements and disagreements, documents important omissions and misunderstandings, and explains what I believe the findings mean for the business.

There is no automated scanner and no recurring software subscription.

It is a manual diagnostic based on the actual responses produced during the evaluation.

You can review completed AI Business Understanding Reports before deciding whether the analysis would be useful for your business.

The report is currently $495 for one business and is normally delivered the next business day after the analysis begins.

If you are ready to find out what ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude actually understand about your business, you can order the AI Business Understanding Report.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an AI Search Engine Audit?

An AI Search Engine Audit examines how AI systems understand, describe, compare, and potentially recommend a business when people use AI to search for information, services, products, providers, or recommendations. Depending on the methodology, it may examine visibility, accuracy, business understanding, competitors, citations, recommendation behavior, or differences among AI systems.

Is an AI Search Engine Audit the same as an SEO audit?

No. An SEO audit generally evaluates factors related to traditional search performance, such as crawling, indexing, content, links, technical issues, and rankings. An AI Search Engine Audit examines what happens when AI systems answer questions about a business, including how the business is understood and potentially recommended.

Is an AI Search Engine Audit the same as an AI Visibility Audit?

The two overlap, but they can emphasize different questions. AI visibility commonly focuses on whether and how often a business appears in AI answers. An AI Search Engine Audit can examine the broader search interaction, including what AI understands about the business, how it describes it, how models disagree, and how that understanding may affect comparisons and recommendations.

Which AI systems do you audit?

I evaluate ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. The same structured question set is used across all three so their responses can be compared.

Why don’t you include every AI search platform?

The purpose of my analysis is not to claim coverage of every AI system. It is to conduct a controlled comparison of three major independent AI systems and examine what their agreements and disagreements reveal about a business. The report is deliberately bounded rather than presented as a universal measurement of AI.

Can an AI Search Engine Audit guarantee that AI will recommend my business?

No. An audit can examine how a business is currently understood and how it appears in recommendation related questions under the conditions tested. It cannot guarantee future recommendations from an AI system.

Can I perform an AI Search Engine Audit myself?

You can perform useful checks yourself, but a structured audit requires more than asking one question. Questions should be tested consistently, model responses should be kept independent, and the answers need to be compared for agreements, disagreements, omissions, uncertainty, and incorrect conclusions.

Is an AI Search Engine Audit automated?

It can be. Some providers use automated systems to track prompts, mentions, citations, and visibility metrics. My own analysis is manual. I personally review and compare the responses from ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.

How often should a business get an AI Search Engine Audit?

There is no universal schedule. Rechecking can make sense after significant business changes, changes to important information online, or enough time has passed that the business wants a new dated view of how AI systems understand it. An audit should answer a real business question rather than exist simply to create another recurring subscription.

What do I receive from your audit?

The Frank Masotti AI Business Understanding Report is a written report covering one business across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. It documents the findings from the model responses, compares agreements and disagreements, identifies omissions and misunderstandings, and includes recommended next steps based on what the analysis found.

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@graph": [
    {
      "@type": "WebPage",
      "@id": "https://frankmasotti.com/insights/ai-search-engine-audit/#webpage",
      "url": "https://frankmasotti.com/insights/ai-search-engine-audit/",
      "name": "What Is an AI Search Engine Audit?",
      "description": "An AI Search Engine Audit examines how artificial intelligence systems understand, describe, compare, and potentially recommend a business when people use AI to search for information, products, services, providers, and recommendations.",
      "isPartOf": {
        "@id": "https://frankmasotti.com/#website"
      },
      "primaryImageOfPage": {
        "@id": "https://frankmasotti.com/insights/ai-search-engine-audit/#primaryimage"
      },
      "mainEntity": {
        "@id": "https://frankmasotti.com/insights/ai-search-engine-audit/#faq"
      },
      "about": {
        "@type": "Thing",
        "name": "AI Search Engine Audit"
      }
    },
    {
      "@type": "Article",
      "@id": "https://frankmasotti.com/insights/ai-search-engine-audit/#article",
      "headline": "What Is an AI Search Engine Audit?",
      "description": "An AI Search Engine Audit examines how artificial intelligence systems understand, describe, compare, and potentially recommend a business when people use AI to search for information, products, services, providers, and recommendations.",
      "mainEntityOfPage": {
        "@id": "https://frankmasotti.com/insights/ai-search-engine-audit/#webpage"
      },
      "image": {
        "@id": "https://frankmasotti.com/insights/ai-search-engine-audit/#primaryimage"
      },
      "author": {
        "@type": "Person",
        "@id": "https://frankmasotti.com/#frank-masotti",
        "name": "Frank Masotti",
        "url": "https://frankmasotti.com/about.html"
      },
      "publisher": {
        "@id": "https://frankmasotti.com/#organization"
      },
      "about": {
        "@type": "Thing",
        "name": "AI Search Engine Audit"
      },
      "keywords": [
        "AI Search Engine Audit",
        "AI Visibility Audit",
        "AI Business Understanding",
        "ChatGPT",
        "Gemini",
        "Claude",
        "AI Search"
      ]
    },
    {
      "@type": "ImageObject",
      "@id": "https://frankmasotti.com/insights/ai-search-engine-audit/#primaryimage",
      "url": "https://frankmasotti.com/insights/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/What-Is-an-AI-Search-Engine-Audit.webp",
      "contentUrl": "https://frankmasotti.com/insights/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/What-Is-an-AI-Search-Engine-Audit.webp",
      "caption": "What Is an AI Search Engine Audit?"
    },
    {
      "@type": "FAQPage",
      "@id": "https://frankmasotti.com/insights/ai-search-engine-audit/#faq",
      "mainEntity": [
        {
          "@type": "Question",
          "name": "What is an AI Search Engine Audit?",
          "acceptedAnswer": {
            "@type": "Answer",
            "text": "An AI Search Engine Audit examines how AI systems understand, describe, compare, and potentially recommend a business when people use AI to search for information, services, products, providers, or recommendations.

"Who would you recommend for this?"

"Tell me about this company."

"What businesses provide this service in my area?"

"Is this company a good choice for what I need?"

"How does this business compare with its competitors?"

"What is this company known for?"

Does it understand the business's location or service area?

"How well is my website optimized for search?"

it asks:

"What do AI systems conclude about my business when someone searches by asking them questions?"

Each question begins in a fresh conversation without previous conversation context, and no model sees another model's answers.

I do not provide the model with the company's website, marketing copy, or a description telling it what the business is supposed to be.

They may disagree about the company's market position.

Why don't you include every AI search platform?

["GET
