Usually nothing did.

Here is the direct answer. Schema only describes the pages it is installed on. It is a labeling layer attached to your website, and its authority ends at your domain. Every other place on the internet that mentions your business, and there are more of them than you think, cannot read your markup and was never going to. You bought a very precise tool with a very specific jurisdiction, and the thing describing your business incorrectly is often standing outside it.

This is a narrower point than the general question of what schema actually does. This post is about the boundary, because that boundary is where most schema disappointment actually comes from.

The Hidden Problem: Schema Is Sold as a Broadcast

The way schema gets described in a sales conversation, it sounds like a transmission. Add the markup, tell AI what your business is, done. The language points outward.

The mechanism points inward. Schema is closer to a label on a filing cabinet than an announcement. It sits in the code of your pages and it says, to anything reading those pages, this is a service, this is the organization that offers it, this is where that organization is located. Anything not reading your pages hears none of it.

That distinction never comes up, because it is not a flaw anyone needs to disclose. The markup does exactly what it claims. The gap is between what it does and what the business owner assumed it would reach.

Why This Stays Invisible

Your website is the only part of your online presence you look at regularly. It is the part you own, the part you pay for, and the part you can change on a Tuesday afternoon. So when something is wrong with how your business is being represented, the website is where attention goes by default.

Meanwhile there are records about your business you have not personally looked at in years. An old directory profile. A licensing board listing. A chamber page. A partner site that still describes a service line you retired. A review platform that categorized you at signup and has never been revisited. None of these are in your workflow, none of them send you a notification, and none of them appear when you check your own markup. The broader version of this problem is covered in the post on why your website may not be the reason AI gets your business wrong. The schema specific version is worse, because you have taken action and received confirmation that the action succeeded.

The Mechanism: You Are Not Competing With Silence

Here is the part most business owners have never considered.

Those directory listings and review platforms are not unstructured text sitting quietly in a corner. Many of them publish structured data too, describing your business, from their own pages, using the same vocabulary yours does. A directory that lists you with a category you outgrew in 2021 is not vaguely implying that category in prose. It may be declaring it, in machine readable form, with the same technical authority your own markup carries.

So the picture is not your clean structured data against a background of noise. It is your structured statement against other structured statements about the same business, published by sites you do not control, some of which have been making that statement for years. AI builds its picture of your business from information across the web, and structured data from a third party is still structured data.

Then there is syndication. Business listing data gets copied between aggregators routinely. One outdated record entered once can end up restated across a long list of sites, none of which checked it, all of which now agree with each other. What AI encounters is not one stale listing against your accurate site. It is an apparent consensus, and consensus is persuasive to a system that is weighing sources rather than verifying them. That is a large part of why AI may trust old information about your business.

Your markup gets one vote. It is a good vote, clearly cast, from the most authoritative single source available. It is still one.

The Part That Cannot Be Fixed With Code

There is no version of schema that reaches a page you do not own. You cannot mark up someone else’s listing. You cannot append a correction to a review site’s structured data. You cannot instruct an aggregator to defer to your markup, and there is no setting anywhere that establishes your website as the authoritative record for your own business.

This is worth stating plainly because a lot of money gets spent on the assumption that a technical fix exists. It does not. The off site layer is corrected by contacting sources, claiming profiles, and requesting updates, one at a time, by hand. That work is unglamorous and it is the only thing that touches it.

What schema does contribute here is real, and it is the reason the work still matters. Structured data makes your own version unmistakable, which is what gives a model something firm to resolve toward when sources disagree. It also establishes identity, which is the layer underneath everything else and the reason what an entity is and why AI cares is worth understanding before any of this. Schema strengthens your position in the disagreement. It does not end the disagreement, and it was never built to.

The Business Consequence

The practical result is a business owner who did the right thing and concluded it does not work.

Schema gets implemented. The markup is valid. Six months later an AI model still describes the company using an old category, an old service area, or a service that was discontinued, because the sources feeding that description were never inside the scope of the fix. The reasonable conclusion, from the outside, is that schema is overrated. So the next recommendation gets ignored, and the actual problem, which sits on four or five specific pages elsewhere on the web, goes untouched for another year.

Meanwhile the description a prospect receives when they ask about your category is built from whatever the model could confidently assemble. What that resolution looks like in practice is covered in the post on what happens when AI finds conflicting information about a business. You do not get told which version won. You just get fewer of the conversations you should have had.

Where the Report Fits

The reason this problem persists is that you cannot see the outcome from any of the tools that measure the inputs. A validator confirms your markup is well formed. It cannot tell you whether a directory listing from 2019 is currently outvoting it.

The AI Business Understanding Report works from the other direction. It shows what ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini actually say about your business right now, in their own words. If all three describe you accurately, your markup is holding and the off site layer is not fighting you. If a description shows an old category, a wrong service area, or a business you have not been in years, that is the outside layer surfacing, and now you know to go looking for the source rather than reopening your website.

The Plain Version

Schema is not how you tell the internet about your business. It is how you make your own pages impossible to misread.

That is a genuinely valuable thing and it is worth doing well. It is also only ever half the map, and the half most business owners never check is the half doing the damage.

Order the AI Business Understanding Report

If you paid for schema markup, the validator passed, and AI still describes your business incorrectly, you are probably asking what went wrong with the implementation.

You cannot mark up someone else's listing. You cannot append a correction to a review site's structured data.

["GET
