A model is a trained system within AI. An LLM is a type of model built to work with language. GPT is a particular family and architecture of language models. ChatGPT is a product that gives people access to AI models through a conversational interface. A chatbot is software designed to interact with people through conversation.<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The easiest way to understand the difference is to stop treating all six terms as different names for the same thing.<\/p><h2>Longer Explanation<\/h2><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><strong>Artificial intelligence, or AI, is the biggest category.<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">AI refers broadly to computer systems capable of performing tasks associated with intelligence, such as recognizing patterns, making predictions, understanding language, generating content, analyzing images, or making decisions. AI is not one program, one company, or one model.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Think of AI as the umbrella that everything else on this list can fit underneath.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">A system that recognizes objects in photographs can use AI. A fraud detection system can use AI. A recommendation system can use AI. A language model can use AI.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">That means calling ChatGPT &#8220;AI&#8221; is not necessarily wrong, but it is extremely broad. It is similar to calling a pickup truck a vehicle. Correct, but it does not tell you exactly what kind of vehicle you are talking about.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><strong>A model is a trained system.<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Within AI, models are systems trained to recognize patterns in data and produce outputs based on what they learned.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">There are many different kinds of models because there are many different jobs AI can perform. A model might be designed to recognize images, predict weather, detect fraud, understand speech, generate video, or work with language.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">This is where one of the common misunderstandings begins.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The product you interact with and the model doing some of the work behind that product are not necessarily the same thing.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">You can replace or update a model without necessarily replacing the product built around it.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><strong>An LLM is a Large Language Model.<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">An LLM is a particular type of AI model designed to work with language.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Large language models are trained on enormous amounts of data so they can learn patterns and relationships within language. They can then use those patterns to interpret prompts and generate responses.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">LLMs can be used for answering questions, summarizing information, writing, classification, translation, coding, extracting information, and many other language-related tasks.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">So:<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><strong>Every LLM is a model, but not every model is an LLM.<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">An image recognition model, for example, is still an AI model, but that does not automatically make it a large language model.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><strong>GPT is more specific.<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">GPT stands for <strong>Generative Pre-trained Transformer<\/strong>.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">GPT refers to a family and type of language model associated with OpenAI. The name describes important characteristics of how these models were developed: they are generative, they are pre-trained, and they use the transformer architecture.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">This is why &#8220;GPT&#8221; and &#8220;AI&#8221; should not be used as synonyms.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">GPT is part of AI. AI is not part of GPT.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The same applies to LLM and GPT. GPT models are large language models, but GPT is not another name for every LLM. Other companies can develop large language models that are not GPT models.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><strong>ChatGPT is a product.<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">This distinction may be the most important one.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">ChatGPT is not simply another word for GPT.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">ChatGPT is an AI product and assistant developed by OpenAI. It provides an interface through which people can interact with AI models and use additional capabilities provided by the product.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">When you type a question into ChatGPT, you are interacting with the ChatGPT product. A model operates underneath that experience and helps interpret your request and generate the response.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">That distinction becomes important because the capabilities of ChatGPT can extend beyond what the underlying language model does by itself. The product can provide tools and features such as web access, file analysis, image generation, memory, and other capabilities.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">So saying &#8220;ChatGPT&#8221; when you actually mean &#8220;the underlying model&#8221; can create confusion.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><strong>Finally, there is the chatbot.<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">A chatbot is software designed to communicate with a person through conversation, usually through text or voice.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Chatbots existed long before today&#8217;s generative AI systems.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Traditional chatbots might follow predetermined rules:<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Customer: &#8220;What are your hours?&#8221;<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Chatbot: &#8220;We are open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM.&#8221;<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">That system can be a chatbot without using a large language model at all.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Modern AI chatbots can use LLMs to understand much more flexible language and generate responses instead of relying entirely on predetermined scripts.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">That gives us another important distinction:<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><strong>Not every chatbot uses an LLM, and an LLM does not have to be used as a chatbot.<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">An LLM can operate behind software that never presents the user with a chat window.<\/p><h2>How the terms fit together<\/h2><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The relationship looks something like this:<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><strong>AI<\/strong><br \/>\u2193<br \/><strong>Models<\/strong><br \/>\u2193<br \/><strong>Large Language Models (LLMs)<\/strong><br \/>\u2193<br \/><strong>GPT models<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Then products such as <strong>ChatGPT<\/strong> can use those models to provide capabilities to users.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">A <strong>chatbot<\/strong>, meanwhile, describes a conversational type of software interface or application. AI is not one program, one company, or one model.<\/p><p>Think of AI as the umbrella that everything else on this list can fit underneath.<\/p><p>A system that recognizes objects in photographs can use AI. A fraud detection system can use AI. A recommendation system can use AI. A language model can use AI.<\/p><p>That means calling ChatGPT \"AI\" is not necessarily wrong, but it is extremely broad. It is similar to calling a pickup truck a vehicle. Correct, but it does not tell you exactly what kind of vehicle you are talking about.<\/p><p><strong>A model is a trained system.<\/strong><\/p><p>Within AI, models are systems trained to recognize patterns in data and produce outputs based on what they learned.<\/p><p>There are many different kinds of models because there are many different jobs AI can perform. A model might be designed to recognize images, predict weather, detect fraud, understand speech, generate video, or work with language.<\/p><p>This is where one of the common misunderstandings begins.<\/p><p>The product you interact with and the model doing some of the work behind that product are not necessarily the same thing.<\/p><p>You can replace or update a model without necessarily replacing the product built around it.<\/p><p><strong>An LLM is a Large Language Model.<\/strong><\/p><p>An LLM is a particular type of AI model designed to work with language.<\/p><p>Large language models are trained on enormous amounts of data so they can learn patterns and relationships within language. They can then use those patterns to interpret prompts and generate responses.<\/p><p>LLMs can be used for answering questions, summarizing information, writing, classification, translation, coding, extracting information, and many other language-related tasks.<\/p><p>So:<\/p><p><strong>Every LLM is a model, but not every model is an LLM.<\/strong><\/p><p>An image recognition model, for example, is still an AI model, but that does not automatically make it a large language model.<\/p><p><strong>GPT is more specific.<\/strong><\/p><p>GPT stands for <strong>Generative Pre-trained Transformer<\/strong>.<\/p><p>GPT refers to a family and type of language model associated with OpenAI. The name describes important characteristics of how these models were developed: they are generative, they are pre-trained, and they use the transformer architecture.<\/p><p>This is why \"GPT\" and \"AI\" should not be used as synonyms.<\/p><p>GPT is part of AI. AI is not part of GPT.<\/p><p>The same applies to LLM and GPT. GPT models are large language models, but GPT is not another name for every LLM. Other companies can develop large language models that are not GPT models.<\/p><p><strong>ChatGPT is a product.<\/strong><\/p><p>This distinction may be the most important one.<\/p><p>ChatGPT is not simply another word for GPT.<\/p><p>ChatGPT is an AI product and assistant developed by OpenAI. It provides an interface through which people can interact with AI models and use additional capabilities provided by the product.<\/p><p>When you type a question into ChatGPT, you are interacting with the ChatGPT product. A model operates underneath that experience and helps interpret your request and generate the response.<\/p><p>That distinction becomes important because the capabilities of ChatGPT can extend beyond what the underlying language model does by itself.
