OpenAI automatically adds that UTM parameter to referral URLs from ChatGPT search results, so when the tracking information survives the click, it provides a clear signal that the visitor came from ChatGPT.<\/p><p>The important limitation is that you cannot identify every visitor who discovered you through ChatGPT. Some visits arrive without enough referral information to prove where they came from, so analytics can confirm some ChatGPT traffic but cannot give you a complete count.<\/p><h2>How to find ChatGPT traffic in your analytics<\/h2><p>In GA4, open <strong>Reports<\/strong>, then <strong>Acquisition<\/strong>, then <strong>Traffic acquisition<\/strong>. Look at the session source and search for <code>chatgpt.com<\/code>.<\/p><p>Depending on how GA4 processes the visit, you may see something such as:<\/p><ul><li><p><code>chatgpt.com \/ referral<\/code><\/p><\/li><li><p><code>chatgpt.com \/ (not set)<\/code><\/p><\/li><li><p>A session containing <code>utm_source=chatgpt.com<\/code><\/p><\/li><\/ul><p>OpenAI confirms that ChatGPT automatically includes <code>utm_source=chatgpt.com<\/code> in referral URLs from ChatGPT search results. That makes the UTM parameter one of the strongest direct attribution signals available.<\/p><p>You can also examine the landing pages receiving those visits. This tells you which pages people reached after leaving ChatGPT and can help you see which parts of your site are actually receiving identifiable ChatGPT traffic.<\/p><h2>Why the number will not be exact<\/h2><p>Analytics only knows where a visitor came from when information identifying the source reaches your website.<\/p><p>That does not always happen.<\/p><p>A visitor might read about your business in ChatGPT and then type your business name into Google. They might copy your URL and paste it into their browser. A click from an app can also arrive without the referral information normally passed by a web browser. Those visits may appear as direct traffic or be attributed somewhere else even though ChatGPT was responsible for the discovery.<\/p><p>That creates an important distinction between <strong>ChatGPT referral traffic<\/strong> and <strong>traffic influenced by ChatGPT<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Referral traffic can sometimes be measured directly.<\/p><p>Influenced traffic often cannot.<\/p><p>Someone could discover your company through ChatGPT today, remember the name, search for it tomorrow, and visit through Google. Your analytics would credit Google even though ChatGPT introduced the business.<\/p><h2>Can you see what someone asked ChatGPT?<\/h2><p>No. Seeing <code>chatgpt.com<\/code> as the source tells you where the visitor came from. It does not tell you the prompt they entered, the complete answer ChatGPT gave them, why your business appeared, or what other businesses were included in the answer.<\/p><p>ChatGPT Search can provide users with citations and source links, which they can click to visit the referenced website. Your analytics sees the resulting visit when attribution information is available, not the conversation that produced it.<\/p><h2>What if no ChatGPT traffic appears?<\/h2><p>That does not automatically mean ChatGPT never mentions your business or uses your website as a source.<\/p><p>It means your analytics did not record identifiable ChatGPT traffic during the period you checked.<\/p><p>A citation and a visit are two different events. ChatGPT can cite or mention your business without anyone clicking through to your website. Someone can also discover your business through ChatGPT and reach your site later through another route.<\/p><p>So the most accurate way to read the data is simple: identifiable <code>chatgpt.com<\/code> traffic confirms that at least some visitors came directly from ChatGPT.
