Ask ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini about your company and parts of the answer may describe theirs. Their services, their reviews, their location, even their problems can surface under your name, stated with complete confidence, to a prospect who has no way of knowing the answer is stitched together from two different companies.

This is called entity confusion, and it is one of the most common ways AI gets a business wrong through no fault of the business itself. Your website can be accurate. Your listings can be consistent. Your reputation can be excellent. None of that prevents the problem, because the problem does not start with your information. It starts with how AI decides which information belongs to you in the first place.

The direct answer to why this happens: AI systems organize what they know around entities, and the primary key to an entity is its name. When two businesses have the same or similar names, AI has to decide, for every mention it has ever read, which entity that mention belongs to. Sometimes it decides wrong. Sometimes it does not decide at all and simply files everything in one place. Either way, the picture it builds of your business now contains someone else, and everything AI says about you inherits that mix.

Why AI Merges Businesses That Are Not the Same

To understand why this happens so easily, it helps to know what AI is actually doing when it learns about a business. AI thinks in entities, which means it collects every review, article, directory listing, and mention it encounters and attaches each one to a distinct thing with a name. Business names are entities, and the name is what connects the evidence. That is how AI builds a picture of your business from information across the web: one mention at a time, sorted by name.

Now consider what most of those mentions actually look like. A review that says “Summit Plumbing did great work on our water heater.” A local article that mentions “Summit Plumbing” in passing. A directory entry with a name, a phone number, and a category. Very few of these carry enough context to distinguish Summit Plumbing in Phoenix from Summit Plumbing in Denver, and none of them announce which one they mean. A human reader standing in Phoenix knows which company their neighbor is talking about. AI reading the entire web at once has no such standing point. It sees the same name and has to guess whether it is looking at one entity or two.

There is no registry check in this process. Nothing in how AI learns consults state incorporation records or trademark filings to confirm that two similarly named companies are legally distinct. Distinctness has to be visible in the evidence itself, and when the evidence is thin, generic, or geographically vague, the easiest interpretation is often that the two names are one thing. Merging is the default failure, not the exception, because merging is what the evidence appears to support.

Distance does not protect you as much as you would expect. A business owner assumes that a company two thousand miles away in a different specialty could never be confused with theirs. But AI does not experience distance. Both businesses exist to it as text, and text from Denver sits right next to text from Phoenix. If the names match and the categories are close enough, the two files can bleed into each other no matter how far apart the actual companies are.

The Forms the Confusion Takes

Entity confusion is not one single error. It shows up in a few distinct patterns, and each one damages a business differently.

The cleanest version is a full merge. AI treats two companies as one entity and describes a business that does not exist: your name, their service list, a blend of both reputations, a location that might be either. Every fact in the answer can be individually true of somebody, which is exactly how AI combines accurate facts into an inaccurate conclusion. Nothing was invented. It was just attributed to the wrong entity.

More common is partial contamination. AI mostly understands your business correctly but a few of the other company’s details leak in. It describes your services accurately, then quotes their price range. It knows your city, then mentions a complaint that was never about you. These blended answers are harder to catch than complete mistakes because most of the answer sounds right, and AI does not need to get every fact wrong to misunderstand your business. One borrowed detail in an otherwise accurate answer is enough to misprice you, misplace you, or attach a reputation problem you never had.

Then there is absorption, which is what happens when the two similar businesses are not the same size. When one entity has years of coverage, hundreds of reviews, and steady mentions, and the other has a thin file, the well documented company becomes the center of gravity. Questions about the smaller business get answered with the larger one’s information, because that is where the evidence lives. The smaller business does not just get confused with its namesake. It effectively disappears behind it. This is one reason two similar businesses can be understood very differently by AI: the depth of the evidence file decides who wins the name.

And when the evidence genuinely conflicts, when one file says the business is a residential plumber and another says commercial contractor, AI does not pause to investigate. What happens when AI finds conflicting information about a business is usually one of two things: it picks the version with more volume behind it, or it hedges and produces a vague answer that commits to nothing. Neither outcome describes you.

Why Nobody Tells You This Is Happening

The reason entity confusion goes unnoticed is that it happens in conversations you are not part of. Your prospect may ask AI about you before contacting you, and what they get back is the blended answer. If that answer includes the other company’s negative reviews, its higher prices, or its narrower service list, the prospect quietly moves on. No one calls to say the chatbot told them something strange. There is no analytics report for answers given about you inside someone else’s AI session. The cost arrives as an absence: inquiries that never happen, from people who believe they already learned enough.

The confusion can also cut the other way, which is its own kind of risk. If AI attributes your good reputation to the similarly named company, they receive trust you spent years earning. Entity confusion does not respect who did the work. It only follows the name.

And because all AI models do not know the same things, the confusion is rarely uniform. ChatGPT may keep the two businesses straight while Gemini merges them. Claude may know you clearly and hedge about the other company. Checking one model and finding a clean answer tells you almost nothing about what the other systems are telling your prospects.

What Actually Separates Two Similar Entities

AI can keep similarly named businesses apart. It does it constantly, for companies whose evidence makes the separation easy. The separation comes from anchors: details that repeatedly appear next to the name and give each mention an unmistakable home. A consistent full legal name rather than a casual short version. A city and state that show up alongside the name in your own content and in listings. A specialty described the same way everywhere, because consistent terminology matters precisely in moments like this, when AI is deciding which of two files a sentence belongs to.

Your Organization schema helps here too, by stating your exact name, location, and identity in a format built to be unambiguous. Organization Schema Explained covers how that works. But schema only makes claims on your own site, and schema stops at the edge of your website. The mentions doing the damage, the reviews and articles and listings that name you without context, live on properties you do not control. You can strengthen the anchors, but you cannot force every mention of your name on the web to specify which business it means.

Which is why the first step is not fixing anything. It is finding out whether you have this problem at all.

Finding Out Whose Business AI Is Describing

From inside your company, everything looks fine. You know who you are. Your website is accurate. The confusion, if it exists, lives entirely inside the AI systems your prospects are asking, and the only way to see it is to examine what those systems actually say.

That is what the AI Business Understanding Report documents. It records how ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini each describe your business, which is exactly where borrowed details, blended identities, and answers that belong to your namesake become visible. If one model has merged you with a similarly named company while the others have not, the report shows that too, along with where the models agree and where they diverge. If your business shares its name, or nearly shares it, with anyone else, ordering a report is how you find out whether AI is describing your company to your prospects, or quietly describing someone else’s under your name.

<div class="module

If another business shares your name, or something close to it, AI systems can blend the two of you into one.

A review that says "Summit Plumbing did great work on our water heater." A local article that mentions "Summit Plumbing" in passing.

AI mostly understands your business correctly but a few of the other company's details leak in.

Questions about the smaller business get answered with the larger one's information, because that is where the evidence lives.

If that answer includes the other company's negative reviews, its higher prices, or its narrower service list, the prospect quietly moves on. No one calls to say the chatbot told them something strange. There is no analytics report for answers given about you inside someone else's AI session.

If your business shares its name, or nearly shares it, with anyone else, ordering a report is how you find out whether AI is describing your company to your prospects, or quietly describing someone else's under your name.

["GET
