It includes whether AI mentions you, recommends you, cites your website or content, and places your business among the options it presents to a user.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The simplest way to think about it is this: <strong>SEO asks whether people can find you in search results. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/frankmasotti.com\/answers\/what-is-ai-visibility-and-why-does-it-matter-to-my-business\/\"><strong>AI visibility<\/strong><\/a><strong> asks whether AI brings you into the answer.<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">That distinction matters because an AI response is not a traditional search results page. Someone might ask, \u201cWho provides this service in Phoenix?\u201d or \u201cWhat companies should I consider for this problem?\u201d The AI may answer with only a handful of businesses. If yours appears, you have some degree of AI visibility for that question. If it does not, you do not, regardless of how well your website might perform in traditional search.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">AI visibility can include several different things:<\/p><ul data-spread=\"false\"><li>Whether your business is mentioned at all<\/li><li>How frequently it appears across relevant questions<\/li><li>Whether it is recommended as an option<\/li><li>Whether your website or other sources about you are cited<\/li><li>How prominently your business appears compared with competitors<\/li><li>Whether AI describes the business accurately when it does appear<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">That last point is important. Visibility by itself is not necessarily good visibility.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">A business can appear frequently in AI answers while being described incorrectly. AI might associate it with an old service, misunderstand who it serves, omit an important part of the business, or position it in the wrong category. The company is technically visible, but <a href=\"https:\/\/frankmasotti.com\/insights\/why-ai-may-know-individual-facts-about-a-business-but-miss-the-bigger-picture\/\">AI may know individual facts about the business while still missing the bigger picture<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">This is why I separate <strong>AI visibility from AI understanding<\/strong>.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Visibility asks, <strong>\u201cDoes AI bring up my business?\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Understanding asks, <strong>\u201cWhen AI brings up my business, what does it actually believe about me?\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">You need to know both. Being absent from a relevant AI answer is a visibility problem. Being present but misunderstood is a different problem entirely.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">There is also no single universal AI visibility position. ChatGPT can mention a company that Gemini does not. Claude can understand the company correctly while another system gets important details wrong. <a href=\"https:\/\/frankmasotti.com\/insights\/why-ai-may-describe-your-business-differently-depending-on-how-a-question-is-asked\/\">Different questions can also cause AI to describe the same business differently<\/a>. That is why looking at one prompt in one AI system does not tell you very much about your overall AI visibility.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">So when someone talks about improving AI visibility, the real objective should not simply be to make AI mention the business more often. It includes whether AI mentions you, recommends you, cites your website or content, and places your business among the options it presents to a user.<\/p><p>The simplest way to think about it is this: <strong>SEO asks whether people can find you in search results. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/frankmasotti.com\/answers\/what-is-ai-visibility-and-why-does-it-matter-to-my-business\/\"><strong>AI visibility<\/strong><\/a><strong> asks whether AI brings you into the answer.<\/strong><\/p><p>That distinction matters because an AI response is not a traditional search results page. Someone might ask, \u201cWho provides this service in Phoenix?\u201d or \u201cWhat companies should I consider for this problem?\u201d The AI may answer with only a handful of businesses. If yours appears, you have some degree of AI visibility for that question. If it does not, you do not, regardless of how well your website might perform in traditional search.<\/p><p>AI visibility can include several different things:<\/p><ul data-spread=\"false\"><li>Whether your business is mentioned at all<\/li><li>How frequently it appears across relevant questions<\/li><li>Whether it is recommended as an option<\/li><li>Whether your website or other sources about you are cited<\/li><li>How prominently your business appears compared with competitors<\/li><li>Whether AI describes the business accurately when it does appear<\/li><\/ul><p>That last point is important. Visibility by itself is not necessarily good visibility.<\/p><p>A business can appear frequently in AI answers while being described incorrectly. AI might associate it with an old service, misunderstand who it serves, omit an important part of the business, or position it in the wrong category. The company is technically visible, but <a href=\"https:\/\/frankmasotti.com\/insights\/why-ai-may-know-individual-facts-about-a-business-but-miss-the-bigger-picture\/\">AI may know individual facts about the business while still missing the bigger picture<\/a>.<\/p><p>This is why I separate <strong>AI visibility from AI understanding<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Visibility asks, <strong>\u201cDoes AI bring up my business?\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p>Understanding asks, <strong>\u201cWhen AI brings up my business, what does it actually believe about me?\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p>You need to know both. Being absent from a relevant AI answer is a visibility problem. Being present but misunderstood is a different problem entirely.<\/p><p>There is also no single universal AI visibility position. ChatGPT can mention a company that Gemini does not. Claude can understand the company correctly while another system gets important details wrong. <a href=\"https:\/\/frankmasotti.com\/insights\/why-ai-may-describe-your-business-differently-depending-on-how-a-question-is-asked\/\">Different questions can also cause AI to describe the same business differently<\/a>. That is why looking at one prompt in one AI system does not tell you very much about your overall AI visibility.<\/p><p>So when someone talks about improving AI visibility, the real objective should not simply be to make AI mention the business more often.
