What it cannot do by itself is guarantee rankings, understand every competitive factor affecting a website, or make strategic decisions without accurate data and human judgment.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">ChatGPT is best viewed as an SEO tool, not an SEO professional.<\/p><h2>What can ChatGPT do for SEO?<\/h2><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">There are quite a few SEO tasks where ChatGPT can be useful.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">It can help with:<\/p><ul data-spread=\"false\"><li>Topic and content research<\/li><li>Search intent analysis<\/li><li>Content outlines<\/li><li>Titles and meta descriptions<\/li><li>Existing content improvements<\/li><li>Internal linking ideas<\/li><li>FAQ development<\/li><li>Schema markup<\/li><li>HTML and technical troubleshooting<\/li><li>Content comparisons<\/li><li>Identifying subjects a website may not cover clearly<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">It can also help explain information from tools such as Google Search Console, analytics platforms, keyword tools, and site crawlers.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">That distinction matters. ChatGPT can analyze information you give it, but it does not automatically have access to all of the private performance data behind your website.<\/p><h2>Can ChatGPT write SEO content?<\/h2><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Yes, but simply asking ChatGPT to produce hundreds of articles is not an SEO strategy.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Google&#8217;s current guidance specifically says generative AI can be useful for research and adding structure to original content. Google also warns that generating large numbers of pages without adding value can violate its policies on scaled content abuse.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The important issue is not whether AI touched the content. It is whether the finished page provides something useful, accurate, original, and relevant.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Google has gone even further with its recent guidance for generative AI search. It recommends creating unique, non commodity content and specifically points toward firsthand experience and original perspectives rather than simply summarizing information that already exists elsewhere.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">That makes human knowledge more important, not less.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">ChatGPT can help turn your knowledge into a strong page. It cannot manufacture years of actual experience with the subject.<\/p><h2>Can ChatGPT do keyword research?<\/h2><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">It can help, but I would not use ChatGPT as the only source of keyword data.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">ChatGPT can identify related topics, questions, terminology, search intent, and different ways people might phrase a search. That makes it useful during the research process.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Actual search volume, impressions, clicks, rankings, competition, and historical performance should come from appropriate data sources.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">There is a simple rule here.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Use ChatGPT to help you think about the data. Do not confuse what ChatGPT suggests with measured search data.<\/p><h2>Can ChatGPT handle technical SEO?<\/h2><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">To a point.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">ChatGPT can help examine robots.txt rules, canonical tags, redirects, structured data, HTML, XML sitemaps, page templates, crawling problems, and many other technical issues.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">It can also write or review code.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">But technical SEO frequently depends on seeing what is actually happening on the website. A technically correct answer based on incomplete information can still be the wrong answer for that particular site.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">This is one of the reasons I would never blindly paste AI generated code onto a live website without understanding what it does.<\/p><h2>Does using ChatGPT hurt SEO?<\/h2><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Not simply because ChatGPT was used.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Google has repeatedly stated that its focus is on the quality and usefulness of content rather than whether AI was involved in producing it. Using automation primarily to manipulate search rankings is where problems begin.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">So the better question is not, &#8220;Did ChatGPT write this?&#8221;<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">It is, &#8220;Is this page worth finding?&#8221;<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">If the page merely repeats the same information available on hundreds of other websites, having ChatGPT produce it faster does not make it better.<\/p><h2>SEO is also changing because of AI<\/h2><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">There is another side to this question that business owners should understand.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">ChatGPT is no longer only a tool people can use to perform SEO work. ChatGPT itself has become another place where people search for information, research products, compare companies, and ask for business recommendations.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">OpenAI says public websites can appear in ChatGPT search and provides OAI SearchBot specifically for discovering and surfacing website content.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Google is moving in a similar direction with AI Overviews and AI Mode. Its current guidance says traditional SEO fundamentals remain relevant because its generative AI search features still rely on Google&#8217;s core search ranking and quality systems.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">That means SEO and <a href=\"https:\/\/frankmasotti.com\/insights\/what-does-ai-visibility-mean\/\">AI visibility<\/a> are becoming increasingly connected, but they are not identical.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">A business can rank well in traditional search while AI systems still have an incomplete or outdated understanding of the company. That is why I separate traditional SEO questions from the question of <a href=\"https:\/\/frankmasotti.com\/about.html\">how AI actually interprets a business<\/a>.<\/p><h2>So, can ChatGPT actually do SEO?<\/h2><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Yes, parts of it.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">ChatGPT can make an experienced person considerably faster at research, analysis, writing, organization, coding, and problem solving. Do not confuse what ChatGPT suggests with measured search data.<\/p><h2>Can ChatGPT handle technical SEO?<\/h2><p>To a point.<\/p><p>ChatGPT can help examine robots.txt rules, canonical tags, redirects, structured data, HTML, XML sitemaps, page templates, crawling problems, and many other technical issues.<\/p><p>It can also write or review code.<\/p><p>But technical SEO frequently depends on seeing what is actually happening on the website. A technically correct answer based on incomplete information can still be the wrong answer for that particular site.<\/p><p>This is one of the reasons I would never blindly paste AI generated code onto a live website without understanding what it does.<\/p><h2>Does using ChatGPT hurt SEO?<\/h2><p>Not simply because ChatGPT was used.<\/p><p>Google has repeatedly stated that its focus is on the quality and usefulness of content rather than whether AI was involved in producing it. Using automation primarily to manipulate search rankings is where problems begin.<\/p><p>So the better question is not, \"Did ChatGPT write this?\"<\/p><p>It is, \"Is this page worth finding?\"<\/p><p>If the page merely repeats the same information available on hundreds of other websites, having ChatGPT produce it faster does not make it better.<\/p><h2>SEO is also changing because of AI<\/h2><p>There is another side to this question that business owners should understand.<\/p><p>ChatGPT is no longer only a tool people can use to perform SEO work. ChatGPT itself has become another place where people search for information, research products, compare companies, and ask for business recommendations.<\/p><p>OpenAI says public websites can appear in ChatGPT search and provides OAI SearchBot specifically for discovering and surfacing website content.<\/p><p>Google is moving in a similar direction with AI Overviews and AI Mode. Its current guidance says traditional SEO fundamentals remain relevant because its generative AI search features still rely on Google's core search ranking and quality systems.<\/p><p>That means SEO and <a href=\"https:\/\/frankmasotti.com\/insights\/what-does-ai-visibility-mean\/\">AI visibility<\/a> are becoming increasingly connected, but they are not identical.<\/p><p>A business can rank well in traditional search while AI systems still have an incomplete or outdated understanding of the company. That is why I separate traditional SEO questions from the question of <a href=\"https:\/\/frankmasotti.com\/about.html\">how AI actually interprets a business<\/a>.<\/p><h2>So, can ChatGPT actually do SEO?<\/h2><p>Yes, parts of it.<\/p><p>ChatGPT can make an experienced person considerably faster at research, analysis, writing, organization, coding, and problem solving.
