Open a fresh conversation, enter your business name, and ask what it knows about the company. But do not stop with one question. To get a useful picture, you need to ask about your business from several different angles and compare what ChatGPT says each time.<\/p><p>A basic first question might be:<\/p><p><strong>\u201cWhat can you tell me about [Business Name]?\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p>That can show you whether ChatGPT recognizes the business and give you a general idea of how it describes it.<\/p><p>The more revealing questions usually come next.<\/p><h2>Ask ChatGPT Specific Questions About Your Business<\/h2><p>Instead of only asking whether ChatGPT knows your company, ask questions that reveal what it believes about different parts of the business.<\/p><p>For example:<\/p><ul><li><p>What does [Business Name] do?<\/p><\/li><li><p>What services does [Business Name] provide?<\/p><\/li><li><p>Who are the typical customers of [Business Name]?<\/p><\/li><li><p>What is [Business Name] known for?<\/p><\/li><li><p>Where is [Business Name] located?<\/p><\/li><li><p>What makes [Business Name] different from similar companies?<\/p><\/li><li><p>Who are the competitors of [Business Name]?<\/p><\/li><li><p>Would you recommend [Business Name]?<\/p><\/li><li><p>What are the strengths and weaknesses of [Business Name]?<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p>You are not looking for one perfect response. You are looking for patterns.<\/p><p>Does ChatGPT consistently put your company in the correct category? Does it understand your current services? Does it associate you with an old location? Does it leave out an important part of the business? Does it describe you differently depending on how the question is asked?<\/p><p>Those differences matter.<\/p><h2>Ask Questions Without Giving ChatGPT Your Business Name<\/h2><p>This is where the test becomes more interesting.<\/p><p>Knowing something about your company and recommending your company are two different things.<\/p><p>If you own a roofing company in Phoenix, for example, you could ask:<\/p><p><strong>\u201cWhat companies provide residential roofing services in Phoenix?\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p>Or:<\/p><p><strong>\u201cWho would you recommend for roof replacement in Phoenix?\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p>Now you are testing whether ChatGPT associates your business with the category when you have not supplied the company name yourself.<\/p><p>A business can be described accurately when specifically named and still never appear when someone asks ChatGPT for businesses providing that service.<\/p><p>That tells you something very different about how the business is understood.<\/p><h2>Use Fresh Conversations<\/h2><p>Run important questions in fresh conversations rather than continuing one long discussion.<\/p><p>Once you give ChatGPT information about your company, that information becomes part of the conversation. Later answers can be influenced by what you already told it.<\/p><p>You want to see what ChatGPT produces without your help.<\/p><p>It is also worth repeating important questions. ChatGPT does not necessarily produce identical answers every time. A detail that appears once and disappears during several other tests should not automatically be treated as something ChatGPT consistently associates with your business.<\/p><p>The pattern across the answers is more useful than any single response.<\/p><h2>Compare What ChatGPT Says With Reality<\/h2><p>Once you have several answers, stop looking at ChatGPT and look at your actual business.<\/p><p>Compare the two.<\/p><p>Check the business category, services, products, locations, customers, credentials, history, positioning, competitors, and anything else ChatGPT stated as fact.<\/p><p>Pay particular attention to information that is:<\/p><ul><li><p>Incorrect<\/p><\/li><li><p>Outdated<\/p><\/li><li><p>Missing<\/p><\/li><li><p>Vague<\/p><\/li><li><p>Associated with another company<\/p><\/li><li><p>No longer part of the business<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p>One of the most useful findings can be something ChatGPT never mentions.<\/p><p>If an important service represents a large part of your business but ChatGPT consistently leaves it out, that omission tells you something about its current understanding.<\/p><h2>Look at the Sources When ChatGPT Provides Them<\/h2><p>When ChatGPT searches the web and provides sources, examine them.<\/p><p>The answer may be influenced by your website, directories, articles, reviews, business listings, social profiles, old press releases, or other pages discussing the company.<\/p><p>An incorrect answer does not necessarily mean the incorrect information exists on your current website.<\/p><p>I have seen AI systems continue associating businesses with old names, previous services, outdated descriptions, and information from earlier projects because those associations still exist elsewhere online.<\/p><p>Finding the incorrect statement is useful. Finding the information that may be supporting it is much more useful.<\/p><h2>One ChatGPT Answer Is a Check, Not an Analysis<\/h2><p>There is nothing wrong with asking ChatGPT about your own business. In fact, you should.<\/p><p>The limitation is assuming that one answer tells you everything ChatGPT understands about the company.<\/p><p>It does not.<\/p><p>Different questions expose different associations. Recommendation questions can produce different information from factual questions. Category questions can reveal something that a direct business name search never shows.<\/p><p>This is also why I distinguish simply <a href=\"https:\/\/frankmasotti.com\/faqs.html\">asking ChatGPT yourself<\/a> from a structured analysis of how AI understands a business.<\/p><p>When I analyze a business, I question the models from multiple angles and compare what they say because I am looking for the agreements, contradictions, omissions, outdated information, and assumptions that are difficult to see in isolation. The same principle applies when doing your own basic check.<\/p><p>You do not need special software to start.<\/p><p>Ask ChatGPT about your business. Ask it specific questions. Ask questions where you do not provide the business name. Repeat the important ones in fresh conversations. Does it describe you differently depending on how the question is asked?<\/p><p>Those differences matter.<\/p><h2>Ask Questions Without Giving ChatGPT Your Business Name<\/h2><p>This is where the test becomes more interesting.<\/p><p>Knowing something about your company and recommending your company are two different things.<\/p><p>If you own a roofing company in Phoenix, for example, you could ask:<\/p><p><strong>\u201cWhat companies provide residential roofing services in Phoenix?\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p>Or:<\/p><p><strong>\u201cWho would you recommend for roof replacement in Phoenix?\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p>Now you are testing whether ChatGPT associates your business with the category when you have not supplied the company name yourself.<\/p><p>A business can be described accurately when specifically named and still never appear when someone asks ChatGPT for businesses providing that service.<\/p><p>That tells you something very different about how the business is understood.<\/p><h2>Use Fresh Conversations<\/h2><p>Run important questions in fresh conversations rather than continuing one long discussion.<\/p><p>Once you give ChatGPT information about your company, that information becomes part of the conversation. Later answers can be influenced by what you already told it.<\/p><p>You want to see what ChatGPT produces without your help.<\/p><p>It is also worth repeating important questions. ChatGPT does not necessarily produce identical answers every time. A detail that appears once and disappears during several other tests should not automatically be treated as something ChatGPT consistently associates with your business.<\/p><p>The pattern across the answers is more useful than any single response.<\/p><h2>Compare What ChatGPT Says With Reality<\/h2><p>Once you have several answers, stop looking at ChatGPT and look at your actual business.<\/p><p>Compare the two.<\/p><p>Check the business category, services, products, locations, customers, credentials, history, positioning, competitors, and anything else ChatGPT stated as fact.<\/p><p>Pay particular attention to information that is:<\/p><ul><li><p>Incorrect<\/p><\/li><li><p>Outdated<\/p><\/li><li><p>Missing<\/p><\/li><li><p>Vague<\/p><\/li><li><p>Associated with another company<\/p><\/li><li><p>No longer part of the business<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p>One of the most useful findings can be something ChatGPT never mentions.<\/p><p>If an important service represents a large part of your business but ChatGPT consistently leaves it out, that omission tells you something about its current understanding.<\/p><h2>Look at the Sources When ChatGPT Provides Them<\/h2><p>When ChatGPT searches the web and provides sources, examine them.<\/p><p>The answer may be influenced by your website, directories, articles, reviews, business listings, social profiles, old press releases, or other pages discussing the company.<\/p><p>An incorrect answer does not necessarily mean the incorrect information exists on your current website.<\/p><p>I have seen AI systems continue associating businesses with old names, previous services, outdated descriptions, and information from earlier projects because those associations still exist elsewhere online.<\/p><p>Finding the incorrect statement is useful. Finding the information that may be supporting it is much more useful.<\/p><h2>One ChatGPT Answer Is a Check, Not an Analysis<\/h2><p>There is nothing wrong with asking ChatGPT about your own business. In fact, you should.<\/p><p>The limitation is assuming that one answer tells you everything ChatGPT understands about the company.<\/p><p>It does not.<\/p><p>Different questions expose different associations. Recommendation questions can produce different information from factual questions. Category questions can reveal something that a direct business name search never shows.<\/p><p>This is also why I distinguish simply <a href=\"https:\/\/frankmasotti.com\/faqs.html\">asking ChatGPT yourself<\/a> from a structured analysis of how AI understands a business.<\/p><p>When I analyze a business, I question the models from multiple angles and compare what they say because I am looking for the agreements, contradictions, omissions, outdated information, and assumptions that are difficult to see in isolation. The same principle applies when doing your own basic check.<\/p><p>You do not need special software to start.<\/p><p>Ask ChatGPT about your business. Ask it specific questions. Ask questions where you do not provide the business name. Repeat the important ones in fresh conversations.
