A free check can give you a useful first look at whether your business appears in AI answers, but it usually will not provide the depth, repetition, historical tracking, or interpretation of a more complete analysis.<\/p><h2>The Simplest Free Method Is to Ask the AI Systems Yourself<\/h2><p>You do not need special software to perform a basic check.<\/p><p>Open ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini and ask questions that a potential customer might ask when looking for a business like yours.<\/p><p>For example, if you own a plumbing company in Phoenix, you might ask:<\/p><p><strong>\u201cWho would you recommend for plumbing repair in Phoenix?\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p>Then try variations:<\/p><p><strong>\u201cWhat are some good plumbing companies in Phoenix?\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>\u201cWho provides emergency plumbing services in Phoenix?\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>\u201cWhat plumbing companies serve homeowners in Phoenix?\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p>Do not mention your business name in the question if you are testing whether the AI system associates your company with the category on its own.<\/p><p>Record whether your business appears, how it is described, which competitors appear, and whether the information is accurate.<\/p><p>Then repeat the process with the other AI systems.<\/p><p>That costs nothing but your time.<\/p><h2>You Can Also Ask AI Directly About Your Business<\/h2><p>Recommendation visibility is only one part of the picture.<\/p><p>You can also ask each AI system what it knows about your company.<\/p><p>Ask questions such as:<\/p><ul><li><p>What does my business do?<\/p><\/li><li><p>What services does it provide?<\/p><\/li><li><p>Where is it located?<\/p><\/li><li><p>Who are its typical customers?<\/p><\/li><li><p>What is it known for?<\/p><\/li><li><p>What businesses are its competitors?<\/p><\/li><li><p>What are its strengths and weaknesses?<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p>This is slightly different from asking whether the AI recommends you.<\/p><p>One test examines whether your business appears when someone searches by need or category. The other examines what the AI appears to understand once the business has been identified.<\/p><p>Both can reveal useful information.<\/p><p>I covered this process in more detail in <a href=\"https:\/\/frankmasotti.com\/insights\/how-do-i-find-out-what-chatgpt-says-about-my-business\/\">How Do I Find Out What ChatGPT Says About My Business?<\/a>.<\/p><h2>Free AI Visibility Checkers Are Another Option<\/h2><p>There are also free tools that automate parts of this process.<\/p><p>Some provide a visibility score. Others test whether a business appears for selected questions, compare it with competitors, examine citations, or provide a limited scan across several AI systems.<\/p><p>These can be useful for getting a quick baseline without manually running every question yourself.<\/p><p>The important thing is to understand what the score or result actually represents.<\/p><p>If a tool reports that your AI visibility is 42 percent, find out what produced that number.<\/p><p>Which AI systems were checked?<\/p><p>How many questions were asked?<\/p><p>What questions were used?<\/p><p>How often was each question tested?<\/p><p>Was the business being tested for mentions, citations, recommendation position, sentiment, or something else?<\/p><p>Two free tools can give the same business very different scores because they are measuring different things.<\/p><p>That does not automatically mean either tool is wrong.<\/p><p>It may mean they asked different questions.<\/p><h2>A Free Check Is Usually a Snapshot<\/h2><p>This is probably the biggest limitation to understand.<\/p><p>A free AI visibility check generally tells you something about what happened during that particular test.<\/p><p>AI responses can vary. Different questions produce different results. Different models can understand the same business differently.<\/p><p>That means you should be careful about treating one free score as a permanent measurement of your business.<\/p><p>If a free checker says your business is highly visible, that does not necessarily mean every AI system will recommend it for every relevant question.<\/p><p>Likewise, a poor score does not automatically mean your business is invisible everywhere.<\/p><p>Treat it as evidence, not a verdict.<\/p><h2>Free Checking Can Tell You Whether You Should Investigate Further<\/h2><p>This is where I think free AI visibility checking is genuinely useful.<\/p><p>Use it as reconnaissance.<\/p><p>You might discover that ChatGPT recognizes your business but never recommends it.<\/p><p>You might find that Gemini understands your current services while Claude still associates the company with something you stopped offering years ago.<\/p><p>You might discover that all three systems describe your business accurately.<\/p><p>That is useful too.<\/p><p>There is no reason to buy a tool, subscription, or analysis simply because AI visibility exists.<\/p><p>First find out whether there is actually something worth investigating.<\/p><h2>What Free Checks Usually Do Not Tell You<\/h2><p>The limitation is not necessarily the accuracy of the free tool.<\/p><p>The limitation is scope.<\/p><p>A quick checker may tell you that your business appeared in four out of ten questions.<\/p><p>It cannot necessarily tell you why.<\/p><p>It may not reveal that two AI systems disagree about your primary business category. It may not identify an outdated association appearing repeatedly across different types of questions. It may not show that an important service is consistently missing even though the business itself is frequently mentioned.<\/p><p>Those findings require looking at the answers themselves rather than only the resulting score.<\/p><p>That is the difference between measuring visibility and investigating AI understanding.<\/p><h2>Start Free<\/h2><p>If you have never checked how AI systems represent your business, I would start free.<\/p><p>Ask ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini questions yourself.<\/p><p>Try a free visibility checker.<\/p><p>Compare what you find.<\/p><p>Write down anything that looks incorrect, outdated, inconsistent, or missing.<\/p><p>If the answers look good and that satisfies what you wanted to know, you may not need anything else.<\/p><p>If the results raise more questions than they answer, then you can decide whether you need ongoing monitoring, a more comprehensive tool, or a deeper analysis.<\/p><p>Checking your AI visibility does not have to begin with a credit card.<\/p><p><strong>It should begin with finding out what the AI systems actually say.<\/strong><\/p>    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- \/module text -->        <\/div>\n                        <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n<!--\/themify_builder_content-->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yes. Others test whether a business appears for selected questions, compare it with competitors, examine citations, or provide a limited scan across several AI systems.<\/p><p>These can be useful for getting a quick baseline without manually running every question yourself.<\/p><p>The important thing is to understand what the score or result actually represents.<\/p><p>If a tool reports that your AI visibility is 42 percent, find out what produced that number.<\/p><p>Which AI systems were checked?<\/p><p>How many questions were asked?<\/p><p>What questions were used?<\/p><p>How often was each question tested?<\/p><p>Was the business being tested for mentions, citations, recommendation position, sentiment, or something else?<\/p><p>Two free tools can give the same business very different scores because they are measuring different things.<\/p><p>That does not automatically mean either tool is wrong.<\/p><p>It may mean they asked different questions.<\/p><h2>A Free Check Is Usually a Snapshot<\/h2><p>This is probably the biggest limitation to understand.<\/p><p>A free AI visibility check generally tells you something about what happened during that particular test.<\/p><p>AI responses can vary. Different models can understand the same business differently.<\/p><p>That means you should be careful about treating one free score as a permanent measurement of your business.<\/p><p>If a free checker says your business is highly visible, that does not necessarily mean every AI system will recommend it for every relevant question.<\/p><p>Likewise, a poor score does not automatically mean your business is invisible everywhere.<\/p><p>Treat it as evidence, not a verdict.<\/p><h2>Free Checking Can Tell You Whether You Should Investigate Further<\/h2><p>This is where I think free AI visibility checking is genuinely useful.<\/p><p>Use it as reconnaissance.<\/p><p>You might discover that ChatGPT recognizes your business but never recommends it.<\/p><p>You might find that Gemini understands your current services while Claude still associates the company with something you stopped offering years ago.<\/p><p>You might discover that all three systems describe your business accurately.<\/p><p>That is useful too.<\/p><p>There is no reason to buy a tool, subscription, or analysis simply because AI visibility exists.<\/p><p>First find out whether there is actually something worth investigating.<\/p><h2>What Free Checks Usually Do Not Tell You<\/h2><p>The limitation is not necessarily the accuracy of the free tool.<\/p><p>The limitation is scope.<\/p><p>A quick checker may tell you that your business appeared in four out of ten questions.<\/p><p>It cannot necessarily tell you why.<\/p><p>It may not reveal that two AI systems disagree about your primary business category. It may not identify an outdated association appearing repeatedly across different types of questions.
