Do not stop after asking whether it knows your business. Check what it believes you do, who you serve, what category you belong in, what services you provide, and when it would recommend you.<\/p><p>That distinction matters because an AI system can recognize your business and still misunderstand it.<\/p><h2>Recognition Is Not the Same as Understanding<\/h2><p>If you ask ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini about your company and receive a detailed description, it is tempting to assume everything is fine.<\/p><p>That only proves the system has information associated with your business.<\/p><p>The real question is whether those associations are correct.<\/p><p>An AI system might correctly identify your company while getting your primary service wrong. It might associate you with an old location, describe services you no longer provide, overlook services that are now central to the business, or place you in a category that does not accurately describe what you do.<\/p><p>The answer can sound completely confident while still containing those problems.<\/p><p>That is why checking AI understanding requires more than asking, &#8220;Do you know my company?&#8221;<\/p><h2>Ask Questions From Several Angles<\/h2><p>Start with your business name and ask questions that test different parts of the AI system&#8217;s understanding.<\/p><p>Useful areas to investigate include:<\/p><ul><li><p>What does this business do?<\/p><\/li><li><p>What services or products does it provide?<\/p><\/li><li><p>What type of company is it?<\/p><\/li><li><p>Who are its typical customers?<\/p><\/li><li><p>What is the business known for?<\/p><\/li><li><p>What makes it different from similar businesses?<\/p><\/li><li><p>When would you recommend this company?<\/p><\/li><li><p>What companies are alternatives or competitors?<\/p><\/li><li><p>What are the strengths and weaknesses of this business?<\/p><\/li><li><p>What attributes would you associate with this company?<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p>Then compare those answers with the business as it exists today.<\/p><p>You are looking for more than obvious factual errors. Pay attention to emphasis.<\/p><p>If you offer six services but AI repeatedly talks about one service you stopped emphasizing three years ago, that tells you something about its understanding. If AI knows all of your services but consistently describes you as the wrong type of company, that matters too.<\/p><h2>Check More Than One AI System<\/h2><p>One of the biggest mistakes is testing only ChatGPT.<\/p><p>ChatGPT may understand your business accurately while Gemini emphasizes something completely different. Claude may recognize information that neither of the others mentions.<\/p><p>That is why I recommend comparing multiple AI systems rather than treating the answer from one model as the answer from AI.<\/p><p>I have repeatedly found that the disagreements between models can be more revealing than the agreements.<\/p><p>If ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini independently describe a business in essentially the same way, you have evidence of a fairly consistent understanding.<\/p><p>If all three tell different stories, that is a different finding entirely.<\/p><p>This is also why <a href=\"https:\/\/frankmasotti.com\/answers\/why-cant-i-just-ask-chatgpt-myself\/\">asking ChatGPT about your business yourself<\/a> is a good starting point, but it should not necessarily be the end of the investigation.<\/p><h2>Separate Incorrect Information From Missing Information<\/h2><p>There are two different problems to look for.<\/p><p>The first is information that is wrong.<\/p><p>AI might have the wrong location, an outdated service, an incorrect description, or a mistaken assumption about the company.<\/p><p>The second is information that is missing.<\/p><p>AI might accurately describe everything it knows about you while completely overlooking an important service, market, qualification, specialty, or part of your current positioning.<\/p><p>Nothing in the answer is technically false, but the overall picture is still incomplete.<\/p><p>That distinction matters because an incomplete understanding can influence how AI answers questions about whether your business is appropriate for a particular customer.<\/p><h2>Test Recommendation Understanding Too<\/h2><p>There is another level beyond asking AI to describe you.<\/p><p>Ask when it would recommend your business.<\/p><p>An AI system can know exactly what your company does and still fail to associate it with situations where you should logically be considered.<\/p><p>You can also reverse the test.<\/p><p>Instead of mentioning your business by name, describe the type of company, service, or solution a customer needs and see which businesses AI recommends.<\/p><p>This tests something different.<\/p><p>A branded question asks, &#8220;What do you know about this business?&#8221;<\/p><p>An unbranded question asks, &#8220;Does this business naturally come to mind when the need arises?&#8221;<\/p><p>Both are useful, but they are not measuring the same thing.<\/p><h2>Do Not Treat One Answer as Permanent<\/h2><p>AI answers can change.<\/p><p>Different systems use different information, and answers can also vary depending on the question, available web information, model updates, and other circumstances.<\/p><p>Your test is therefore a snapshot of what you can observe now, not a permanent record of what an AI system will always say.<\/p><p>That makes consistency important.<\/p><p>If you want to compare results later, save the questions you used, record the answers, note the date, and use the same questions again.<\/p><p>You can then see whether the understanding has actually changed instead of relying on memory.<\/p><h2>What I Look for When I Analyze AI Understanding<\/h2><p>When I analyze how AI understands a business, I am not primarily interested in whether the company name appears.<\/p><p>I look at the story the systems have constructed around that company.<\/p><p>What category have they placed it in?<\/p><p>What do they think it actually does?<\/p><p>Which services do they associate with it?<\/p><p>What information appears consistently?<\/p><p>What has disappeared?<\/p><p>Where are they making assumptions?<\/p><p>Where do ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini agree?<\/p><p>Where do they contradict each other?<\/p><p>And does the combined picture resemble the business that actually exists?<\/p><p>That last question is the important one.<\/p><p>A business can have plenty of AI visibility and still be understood incorrectly. Visibility tells you that you appeared. Understanding tells you what AI thinks appeared.<\/p><p>Those are not the same thing.<\/p><p>If you want to examine that distinction more systematically, an <a href=\"https:\/\/frankmasotti.com\/how-it-works.html\">AI Business Understanding Report<\/a> compares how ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini currently interpret the same business and identifies where those interpretations agree, conflict, omit important information, or no longer match reality.<\/p><h2>The Bottom Line<\/h2><p>To check whether AI understands your business correctly, do not ask one question and look for your name.<\/p><p>Test what AI believes about your category, services, customers, positioning, attributes, and recommendations. If AI knows all of your services but consistently describes you as the wrong type of company, that matters too.<\/p><h2>Check More Than One AI System<\/h2><p>One of the biggest mistakes is testing only ChatGPT.<\/p><p>ChatGPT may understand your business accurately while Gemini emphasizes something completely different. Claude may recognize information that neither of the others mentions.<\/p><p>That is why I recommend comparing multiple AI systems rather than treating the answer from one model as the answer from AI.<\/p><p>I have repeatedly found that the disagreements between models can be more revealing than the agreements.<\/p><p>If ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini independently describe a business in essentially the same way, you have evidence of a fairly consistent understanding.<\/p><p>If all three tell different stories, that is a different finding entirely.<\/p><p>This is also why <a href=\"https:\/\/frankmasotti.com\/answers\/why-cant-i-just-ask-chatgpt-myself\/\">asking ChatGPT about your business yourself<\/a> is a good starting point, but it should not necessarily be the end of the investigation.<\/p><h2>Separate Incorrect Information From Missing Information<\/h2><p>There are two different problems to look for.<\/p><p>The first is information that is wrong.<\/p><p>AI might have the wrong location, an outdated service, an incorrect description, or a mistaken assumption about the company.<\/p><p>The second is information that is missing.<\/p><p>AI might accurately describe everything it knows about you while completely overlooking an important service, market, qualification, specialty, or part of your current positioning.<\/p><p>Nothing in the answer is technically false, but the overall picture is still incomplete.<\/p><p>That distinction matters because an incomplete understanding can influence how AI answers questions about whether your business is appropriate for a particular customer.<\/p><h2>Test Recommendation Understanding Too<\/h2><p>There is another level beyond asking AI to describe you.<\/p><p>Ask when it would recommend your business.<\/p><p>An AI system can know exactly what your company does and still fail to associate it with situations where you should logically be considered.<\/p><p>You can also reverse the test.<\/p><p>Instead of mentioning your business by name, describe the type of company, service, or solution a customer needs and see which businesses AI recommends.<\/p><p>This tests something different.<\/p><p>A branded question asks, \"What do you know about this business?\"<\/p><p>An unbranded question asks, \"Does this business naturally come to mind when the need arises?\"<\/p><p>Both are useful, but they are not measuring the same thing.<\/p><h2>Do Not Treat One Answer as Permanent<\/h2><p>AI answers can change.<\/p><p>Different systems use different information, and answers can also vary depending on the question, available web information, model updates, and other circumstances.<\/p><p>Your test is therefore a snapshot of what you can observe now, not a permanent record of what an AI system will always say.<\/p><p>That makes consistency important.<\/p><p>If you want to compare results later, save the questions you used, record the answers, note the date, and use the same questions again.<\/p><p>You can then see whether the understanding has actually changed instead of relying on memory.<\/p><h2>What I Look for When I Analyze AI Understanding<\/h2><p>When I analyze how AI understands a business, I am not primarily interested in whether the company name appears.<\/p><p>I look at the story the systems have constructed around that company.<\/p><p>What category have they placed it in?<\/p><p>What do they think it actually does?<\/p><p>Which services do they associate with it?<\/p><p>What information appears consistently?<\/p><p>What has disappeared?<\/p><p>Where are they making assumptions?<\/p><p>Where do ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini agree?<\/p><p>Where do they contradict each other?<\/p><p>And does the combined picture resemble the business that actually exists?<\/p><p>That last question is the important one.<\/p><p>A business can have plenty of AI visibility and still be understood incorrectly. Visibility tells you that you appeared.
