Do not choose based on a proprietary score, a fancy dashboard, or promises to make your business visible in AI.<\/p><p>Before hiring anyone, make sure you understand exactly what they are going to tell you.<\/p><h2>Start With What You Want to Know<\/h2><p>AI visibility audit has become a broad term.<\/p><p>One provider may measure how often your business appears in AI recommendations. Another may analyze citations and competitors. Another may audit your website. Another may examine whether AI systems understand your business correctly.<\/p><p>Those are different services.<\/p><p>Before comparing providers, decide whether you want measurement, monitoring, technical analysis, competitive analysis, business understanding, or some combination of them.<\/p><p>If you are unsure about the differences, start with <a href=\"https:\/\/frankmasotti.com\/insights\/what-should-an-ai-visibility-audit-include\/\">what an AI visibility audit should include<\/a>.<\/p><h2>Ask How the Audit Is Actually Done<\/h2><p>A credible provider should be able to explain the methodology without hiding behind phrases like proprietary technology.<\/p><p>Ask:<\/p><ul><li><p>Which AI systems are examined?<\/p><\/li><li><p>What questions are asked?<\/p><\/li><li><p>How are those questions selected?<\/p><\/li><li><p>Are the systems examined separately?<\/p><\/li><li><p>Is the work automated, manual, or both?<\/p><\/li><li><p>How are conflicting answers handled?<\/p><\/li><li><p>What evidence supports the findings?<\/p><\/li><li><p>What exactly will I receive?<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p>You should understand what you are buying before you pay for it.<\/p><h2>Be Careful With a Single Score<\/h2><p>A score can be useful, but it can also hide important information.<\/p><p>If a provider gives your business an AI visibility score of 58, ask what 58 actually means.<\/p><p>Which AI systems were tested? Which questions were used? What counted as visibility? Were factual accuracy and recommendations included? How were the different measurements weighted?<\/p><p>If those questions cannot be answered clearly, the number does not tell you very much.<\/p><p>I have written separately about <a href=\"https:\/\/frankmasotti.com\/insights\/how-is-ai-visibility-calculated\/\">how AI visibility is calculated<\/a> because there is no universal AI visibility score used by ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or the industry as a whole.<\/p><h2>Know Whether You Are Buying an Audit or a Sales Funnel<\/h2><p>This is one I would pay particular attention to.<\/p><p>Some providers only perform the audit. Others perform the audit because they also want to sell you ongoing optimization, content, SEO, consulting, or a monthly monitoring service.<\/p><p>There is nothing inherently wrong with either model.<\/p><p>But you should know which one you are buying.<\/p><p>An independent audit can make sense when you want the diagnosis separated from whoever might eventually sell you the treatment.<\/p><h2>Look at the Deliverable<\/h2><p>Before choosing a provider, ask to see a sample report or a detailed description of what you will receive.<\/p><p>A useful audit should leave you with findings you can understand and use.<\/p><p>You should not finish the process knowing only that your score is good, bad, or average.<\/p><p>You should know what was found, why it matters, and what deserves your attention.<\/p><h2>Manual or Automated?<\/h2><p>Neither is automatically better.<\/p><p>Automated tools are useful for running many prompts, measuring changes, and providing ongoing monitoring.<\/p><p>Manual analysis is useful when interpretation matters, especially when AI answers are technically correct but incomplete, outdated, contradictory, or misleading.<\/p><p>I use a manual process for my <a href=\"https:\/\/frankmasotti.com\/how-it-works.html\">AI Business Understanding Report<\/a> because I am examining what ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini actually understand about one business and comparing the differences between them.<\/p><p>That is a different job from continuous visibility tracking.<\/p><h2>The Bottom Line<\/h2><p>Choose an AI visibility audit provider by examining the methodology, not the marketing.<\/p><p>Know what they test, which AI systems they examine, how they reach their conclusions, what you will receive, and whether the audit is independent or connected to additional services.<\/p><p>Most importantly, make sure the provider is answering the question you actually want answered.<\/p><p>The best AI visibility audit is not necessarily the Another may examine whether AI systems understand your business correctly.<\/p><p>Those are different services.<\/p><p>Before comparing providers, decide whether you want measurement, monitoring, technical analysis, competitive analysis, business understanding, or some combination of them.<\/p><p>If you are unsure about the differences, start with <a href=\"https:\/\/frankmasotti.com\/insights\/what-should-an-ai-visibility-audit-include\/\">what an AI visibility audit should include<\/a>.<\/p><h2>Ask How the Audit Is Actually Done<\/h2><p>A credible provider should be able to explain the methodology without hiding behind phrases like proprietary technology.<\/p><p>Ask:<\/p><ul><li><p>Which AI systems are examined?<\/p><\/li><li><p>What questions are asked?<\/p><\/li><li><p>How are those questions selected?<\/p><\/li><li><p>Are the systems examined separately?<\/p><\/li><li><p>Is the work automated, manual, or both?<\/p><\/li><li><p>How are conflicting answers handled?<\/p><\/li><li><p>What evidence supports the findings?<\/p><\/li><li><p>What exactly will I receive?<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p>You should understand what you are buying before you pay for it.<\/p><h2>Be Careful With a Single Score<\/h2><p>A score can be useful, but it can also hide important information.<\/p><p>If a provider gives your business an AI visibility score of 58, ask what 58 actually means.<\/p><p>Which AI systems were tested? Which questions were used? What counted as visibility? Were factual accuracy and recommendations included?
