AI does not need two facts to appear on the same page to treat them as related. It joins them through shared handles: a name, an address, a phone number, a person, a domain. When a fact in one place carries the same handle as a fact somewhere else, the model files the two together. That is the whole mechanism, and it runs without anyone deciding the two facts belong together.

This matters because “related” is not decided by whether the information is actually about you. It is decided by whether it shares a handle with something that is. A review that names your company, a directory entry with your phone number, a bio that mentions your founder, a page on a partner’s site that links to your domain, all of it gets pulled toward the same file. Most of the time that is correct. Some of the time it pulls in a neighbor, a former employer, a landlord, or a company two suites down, and the answer your prospect hears is assembled from a mix you would never have approved.

AI Assembles a File. It Does Not Read a Story.

AI builds its picture of your business from information across the web, and the word to notice is builds. Nothing on the web hands the model a finished description. It receives thousands of fragments, most of them a sentence or two long, and has to decide which fragments describe the same thing. That sorting is what it means to say AI thinks in entities: the model collects fragments into distinct things, and the handles are how it knows which thing a fragment belongs to.

The strongest handle is your name, which is why I wrote about how AI connects a business name with its services, people, and locations. But the name is not the only one. Anything that repeatedly appears with your business and is specific enough to identify you can do the same job. Your street address. Your phone number. Your website domain. The full name of your founder. A distinctive service name you coined. Each of these is a thread the model can follow from one source to another, and the model follows all of them at once.

Two Facts Never Have to Meet

Here is the part that surprises owners. Suppose your website says you specialize in commercial roofing. A local business journal, three years ago, printed your phone number in a list of contractors and described the category as general construction. A supplier’s page lists your address and mentions residential work. None of those three pages links to the others. No human reader would ever see them together.

The model sees them together. The phone number joins the journal to your entity. The address joins the supplier to it. Now your file contains commercial roofing, general construction, and residential work, each arriving with its handle intact and its original context stripped away. That stripping is the same problem described in How AI Understands Context, but the join is what makes it consequential. The fragments did not drift into your file by accident. They were pulled in by an identifier that is genuinely yours.

This is also how AI can combine accurate facts into an inaccurate conclusion. Every fragment was true of something at some point. The join made them true of you, all at once, right now.

Relatedness Travels in Chains

Joins do not stop at one hop. A handle connects your business to a person. That person has a handle of their own, which connects them to a previous company, a board seat, an article they were quoted in. The model can follow that chain, and it does, because people are entities with files just as full as yours.

Two hops out, the connection is weak, but the model does not label it as weak in the answer. A founder who spent fifteen years at a large firm before starting yours can cause that firm’s scale, pricing, and client type to color how your company gets described. A partner listed on your site can import their specialty into your file. A former employee whose LinkedIn still says they work for you keeps a thread open to whatever they are doing now. Each hop is defensible on its own. Stacked together, they produce a description of your business built partly from someone else’s evidence, delivered in the same steady tone as everything else, because AI sounds certain even when its understanding is incomplete.

When a Handle Belongs to More Than One Business

The failure that costs the most is a shared handle. A name shared with a company in another state is the obvious case, and I covered it in Entity Confusion Between Similar Businesses. The less obvious cases are the ones owners never think to check.

A suite address in a shared office building is one. Dozens of businesses use the same street address, differing only by a suite number that many directories drop. To a model joining on address, those businesses are neighbors in a very literal sense, and their fragments can cross over. A phone number you inherited from a previous tenant is another. A domain that once belonged to a different company, or a founder whose name is common enough that a stranger’s bio gets joined to yours, does the same thing. None of these are your fault, and none of them show up in anything you would normally review. They show up in the answers.

The opposite failure exists too. A fact about your business that carries no handle at all, a page that describes a service without ever naming the company, a review that says “they” throughout, a press mention that uses a nickname you never use anywhere else, never gets joined. It sits orphaned, contributing nothing. This is one route to the pattern in Why AI May Know Individual Facts About a Business but Miss the Bigger Picture: the facts existed, but nothing tied them to the file where they would have mattered.

What You Can Tighten, and Where Your Control Ends

You can make your handles stronger and more consistent. Use the same full business name everywhere, including the places that tempt you to shorten it, because consistent terminology matters at the join even more than it does in your copy. Keep the address, phone, and domain identical across every listing you control. State plainly who leads the company and what their relationship to it is, rather than leaving that to inference. Building Entity Consistency walks through that discipline in more detail, and your Organization schema can restate those handles in a form built to be unambiguous, including the alternate names and the founder link that make correct joins easier.

What you cannot do is govern the joins that happen on properties you do not own. Schema stops at the edge of your website, and the fragments doing the damage, the old journal listing, the shared suite address, the former employee’s profile, live beyond that edge. You can add strong threads. You cannot cut the weak ones you have never seen.

Why This Shows Up as Lost Business

The result of a bad join is rarely a description that is obviously wrong. It is a description that is mostly right with something foreign in it: a price tier from the firm your founder used to work for, a service from the company across the hall, a review that was never about you. Your prospect may ask AI about you before contacting you, and if the foreign detail is the one that makes you look like a poor fit, they leave without a word. You never learn which fragment did it, because you never knew it was in your file.

The joins also differ by model. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini each assemble their own file from their own sources, so one may have joined a neighbor’s fragments to your entity while another kept them apart. All AI models do not know the same things, and a clean answer from one of them tells you nothing about what the other two have pulled in.

Seeing What Got Joined to Your Business

The only way to find out which fragments have been connected to your business is to read what the models say and look for the details that do not belong. That is what the AI Business Understanding Report does. I question all three models about your business from multiple angles and document what each one believes, which is where borrowed prices, imported services, misattributed people, and facts from a business that shares one of your handles become visible. Where the three models disagree, that disagreement usually points straight at the fragment that should never have been joined.

You know what is true about your business. What has been connected to it inside AI is a separate question, and it is being answered for your prospects every day. Ordering a report is how you find out whether the file AI keeps on your business contains only your business, or someone else’s as well.

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@graph": [
    {
      "@type": "BlogPosting",
      "@id": "https://frankmasotti.com/insights/how-ai-connects-related-information/#article",
      "url": "https://frankmasotti.com/insights/how-ai-connects-related-information/",
      "mainEntityOfPage": {
        "@type": "WebPage",
        "@id": "https://frankmasotti.com/insights/how-ai-connects-related-information/"
      },
      "headline": "How AI Connects Related Information",
      "description": "AI connects information about businesses across different sources through shared identifiers such as names, addresses, phone numbers, people, and domains.

This matters because "related" is not decided by whether the information is actually about you. It is decided by whether it shares a handle with something that is. A review that names your company, a directory entry with your phone number, a bio that mentions your founder, a page on a partner's site that links to your domain, all of it gets pulled toward the same file.

A supplier's page lists your address and mentions residential work.

A founder who spent fifteen years at a large firm before starting yours can cause that firm's scale, pricing, and client type to color how your company gets described. A partner listed on your site can import their specialty into your file. A former employee whose LinkedIn still says they work for you keeps a thread open to whatever they are doing now. Each hop is defensible on its own. Stacked together, they produce a description of your business built partly from someone else's evidence, delivered in the same steady tone as everything else, because AI sounds certain even when its understanding is incomplete.

A domain that once belonged to a different company, or a founder whose name is common enough that a stranger's bio gets joined to yours, does the same thing. None of these are your fault, and none of them show up in anything you would normally review. They show up in the answers.

The opposite failure exists too. A fact about your business that carries no handle at all, a page that describes a service without ever naming the company, a review that says "they" throughout, a press mention that uses a nickname you never use anywhere else, never gets joined.

Schema stops at the edge of your website, and the fragments doing the damage, the old journal listing, the shared suite address, the former employee's profile, live beyond that edge.

ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini each assemble their own file from their own sources, so one may have joined a neighbor's fragments to your entity while another kept them apart.

Ordering a report is how you find out whether the file AI keeps on your business contains only your business, or someone else's as well.

["GET
