It attaches traits. Affordable or expensive. Small and personal or large and established. Quick to schedule or hard to reach. Best for homeowners, or best for commercial clients. These attributes rarely appear as a tidy list, but they run through almost every answer about you, and they decide something your service list cannot: whether you fit the person asking.

Here is the direct answer to where those attributes come from. Mostly, not from you. Your website tells AI what you do. The adjectives attached to your business are largely written by other people: customers in reviews, writers of comparison lists, and, when nobody has said anything at all, the typical traits of your category. You author your services. The web authors your personality.

That split explains why so many owners are surprised by how AI characterizes them, and why rewriting a tagline rarely changes it.

Services Say What You Do. Attributes Say What You Are Like.

Most checks business owners run on AI ask a factual question: what does this company do? That question tests services, and services are the part of your description you control best. Attributes surface in a different kind of question, the kind prospects ask when they are close to a decision. Who is the most affordable roofer in Mesa. Which accountant is good with restaurants. Is this firm too big for a company my size.

Every one of those questions carries a qualifier, and the qualifier gets matched against attributes, not services. Two plumbers offering identical services can get opposite answers to “who should I call for a quick, inexpensive repair,” because one is characterized as fast and reasonably priced and the other as thorough and premium. The fit judgment described in What Does AI Tell a Customer Who Asks Whether Your Business Is a Good Choice? runs on exactly this layer.

The qualifiers do not even have to be typed. A 2026 Profound study of 71,147 responses found that ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini changed their recommendations when the asker’s age, income, gender, or occupation changed, even though the question itself stayed the same. The models were matching traits about the person against traits about the businesses. It is one more reason AI may describe your business differently depending on how a question is asked, and who is asking it.

Where the Adjectives Actually Come From

AI builds its picture of your business from information across the web, and different sources contribute different things. Directories contribute facts: name, category, address, hours. Your website contributes services. Attributes come from a smaller set of places, most of them outside your control.

Reviews, one recurring word at a time

Customers do not review in service lists. They review in adjectives. Showed up on time. A little pricey but worth it. Hard to reach after the job. Treated us like family. Across dozens or hundreds of reviews, the words that keep recurring become the traits AI associates with you, and that recurrence can matter more than the star rating. A business averaging 4.8 stars whose reviews keep mentioning slow callbacks gets characterized as excellent but hard to reach. A fair summary of the record, and exactly the wrong thing to tell a prospect with an urgent problem.

This is also where attributes go stale. If the complaints about scheduling came from the year before you hired an office manager, they still sit in the record, and AI may trust old information about your business over the newer reviews that describe the fix.

Comparison lists written by people who never hired you

Attributes are relative. Nobody is affordable in isolation; they are affordable compared to someone. That comparing happens most explicitly in “best of” lists, and those lists are among the sources AI leans on hardest when it recommends. Ahrefs found that recently updated “best” lists were the most prominent page type among ChatGPT’s sources for early research questions. Orbit Media’s 2026 analysis of more than 13,000 citations found Claude especially fond of review sites and curated lists, with Gemini also leaning on list roundups.

Those lists sort businesses into roles: the budget pick, the premium option, best for large projects, best for first time buyers. A writer who assembled the list from other websites assigns your role in a single sentence, and once assigned it gets repeated. If one roundup calls you a solid mid range option, that phrase can become your price tier across AI answers, whatever you actually charge.

Your category, when nobody said anything

Then there are the attributes nobody wrote down. If no source says anything about your pricing, your response time, or the size of client you prefer, AI does not leave those traits blank. It fills them with what is typical for businesses like yours, the pattern covered in What Missing Information Can Reveal About AI’s Understanding of a Business. Silence becomes average, and average is rarely the thing that sets you apart.

Your own adjectives, which count least

Your website describes you with attributes too: trusted, premium, responsive, affordable. These carry surprisingly little weight, because every competitor claims the same things and none of it can be confirmed from the text, a distinction covered in The Difference Between Facts and Claims and Why AI Can Misread Marketing Language. What does carry weight is a fact that implies an attribute. A published starting price says something about your price tier that “competitively priced” never will. “Most repairs scheduled within two business days” establishes speed in a way “fast, reliable service” cannot.

Attributes Travel in Bundles

Attributes rarely arrive alone. AI connects traits the way people do. A business characterized as premium is assumed to be expensive, and one assumed to be expensive is quietly treated as a poor fit for small jobs. A business described as small and family owned may be assumed to lack the capacity for commercial contracts, even if it handles them every week.

None of those implications have to be written anywhere. They are inferred from the one attribute that was, a close cousin of the pattern in How AI Can Combine Accurate Facts Into an Inaccurate Conclusion: each trait defensible on its own, the character they add up to not your business. And if your name resembles another company’s, the bundle can include traits that were never yours at all, the problem described in Entity Confusion Between Similar Businesses.

Why Owners Rarely See Their Own Attributes

When owners check AI, they ask about themselves by name, and that question mostly returns services. Attributes appear when the question compares, qualifies, or recommends, which is the kind of question an owner rarely thinks to ask about their own business. It is part of why one AI question cannot show you how AI understands your business.

Attributes also vary by system. Each model draws on a different mix of sources, so ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini do not know the same things. One can call you the dependable choice while another calls you the expensive one. There is no single answer to check.

The Cost Is Being Filtered by Adjectives You Never Chose

The practical effect is that prospects rule you in or out on traits before they learn much else. BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found that 45 percent of consumers had used AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6 percent a year earlier. Recommendation requests usually carry a qualifier, and the qualifier decides whether AI puts your business on the shortlist.

When the attributes are wrong, the losses are specific. Described as expensive, you vanish from budget conscious requests. Described as small, you are skipped for the larger contracts you built the company to win. Described as slow, you lose every urgent job. Nothing in your analytics connects those absences to a phrase in a review from three years ago or a role assigned in someone’s list. This is often the real answer to why AI recommends your competitors but not you. The competitor was not described as better. It was described as a better fit for the words in the question.

Finding Out Which Traits AI Has Attached to You

You cannot correct a characterization you have never read, and you will not read it by asking what your business does.

The AI Business Understanding Report documents how ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini characterize your business, not only what they say you offer. I question each model the way prospects do, including the comparison and fit questions where attributes surface: who you are best for, how you compare on price and speed, what size of client you suit, where each model places you among competitors. Then I note which traits are accurate, which are outdated, which were filled in from category defaults, and where the three models disagree. The methodology explains how every response is preserved and compared.

Your prospects are already hearing an adjective or two about you before they hear anything else. Ordering a report shows you which ones.

When ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini describes your business, it does more than list what you do.

Two plumbers offering identical services can get opposite answers to "who should I call for a quick, inexpensive repair," because one is characterized as fast and reasonably priced and the other as thorough and premium. The fit judgment described in What Does AI Tell a Customer Who Asks Whether Your Business Is a Good Choice? runs on exactly this layer.

The qualifiers do not even have to be typed. A 2026 Profound study of 71,147 responses found that ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini changed their recommendations when the asker's age, income, gender, or occupation changed, even though the question itself stayed the same.

That comparing happens most explicitly in "best of" lists, and those lists are among the sources AI leans on hardest when it recommends. Ahrefs found that recently updated "best" lists were the most prominent page type among ChatGPT's sources for early research questions. Orbit Media's 2026 analysis of more than 13,000 citations found Claude especially fond of review sites and curated lists, with Gemini also leaning on list roundups.

It fills them with what is typical for businesses like yours, the pattern covered in What Missing Information Can Reveal About AI's Understanding of a Business.

A published starting price says something about your price tier that "competitively priced" never will. "Most repairs scheduled within two business days" establishes speed in a way "fast, reliable service" cannot.

And if your name resembles another company's, the bundle can include traits that were never yours at all, the problem described in Entity Confusion Between Similar Businesses.

BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found that 45 percent of consumers had used AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6 percent a year earlier.

Nothing in your analytics connects those absences to a phrase in a review from three years ago or a role assigned in someone's list.

["GET
