How can I check my AI visibility?

AI visibility measures how often AI platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity mention your brand when they answer questions. As more people use AI assistants instead of traditional search, this has become a real metric to track.

You can check your AI visibility in a few ways.

The simplest approach is to use a free visibility checker. Tools like Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking, and others all offer free reports. You enter your brand name and website, and the tool checks how often you appear across the major AI platforms. Most of these give you basic results without requiring a signup, though you get limited checks per day for free accounts.

When you run the check, you’ll get a few key numbers. Your AI visibility score is a baseline number from 0 to 100 that shows how often your brand appears compared to others in your space. You’ll also see the total mentions, which is just a count of how many times your name gets cited across the platforms they tested. Then you get a per platform breakdown showing which AI assistants mention you and which ones don’t. This matters because you might show up regularly in Perplexity but barely appear in ChatGPT.

Pay attention to two different things: mentions and citations. A mention means the AI platform named your brand. A citation means it linked to your website as a source. Citations are more valuable because they drive actual traffic.

You can also manually check by asking each platform directly. Type a question into ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot that relates to what you do. Read through the answers and see if you get mentioned. Check what competitors show up instead. This is slower than using a tool, but it gives you a real sense of how the platforms actually present your business.

Once you have a baseline, run these checks regularly. Track whether your visibility goes up or down. Look at which queries and topics the AI associates with your brand. If the tool shows that competitors appear in certain answers but you don’t, that points to content gaps on your website you should address.

Your AI visibility is still new enough that most businesses haven’t paid attention to it yet. That’s an advantage if you start tracking and optimizing now.
