How to get AI visibility?

AI visibility comes from being mentioned across the sources the models already trust, then making your own pages easy to read and quote. It is mostly an off site game. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and found branded web mentions correlated with AI visibility at 0.664, while backlinks landed at 0.218. A University of Toronto analysis of 11,000 real queries found ChatGPT Search shows a systematic bias toward earned media over content brands publish about themselves. Your website still matters, but it functions as supporting evidence rather than the main signal.

Build the off site footprint

  • Domains with active profiles on review platforms like G2, Capterra, and Trustpilot have roughly three times the chance of being cited by ChatGPT
  • YouTube mentions showed the strongest single correlation of any factor measured across ChatGPT, AI Mode, and AI Overviews, since models read transcripts
  • Get quoted in trade publications, industry press, and podcasts your buyers already follow
  • Contribute genuinely on Reddit and Quora. Promotional posting gets filtered quickly by both the platforms and the models

Make your pages extractable

  • Lead with the answer. An analysis of 1.2 million ChatGPT citations found the majority came from the first third of an article, so a buried claim may never get read
  • Use clear heading structure, short paragraphs, specific numbers, and named sources
  • Keep important information visible on the page instead of hiding it behind tabs or expandable sections
  • Confirm your robots.txt allows the AI crawlers. Blocking them makes visibility impossible
  • Add schema markup that matches what is actually on the page, and keep internal linking and site hierarchy clean

Keep it current

  • Over 70 percent of AI cited pages were updated within the past 12 months, and pages that go more than three months without an update are three times more likely to lose AI visibility
  • ChatGPT skews new, citing URLs roughly 400 days more recent than comparable Google results

Measure it honestly

  • Build a fixed set of 20 to 50 prompts your customers would actually ask, and name the competitors you want to benchmark against
  • Track how often you appear and your share against competitors, not one off screenshots. The same prompt asked twice five minutes apart often returns different brands in a different order
  • Most brands see movement within 60 to 90 days of a focused content and citation program, while going from rarely mentioned to consistently present usually takes 6 to 12 months

One caution before you buy a tool or hire an agency. The platforms reward different things: ChatGPT leans on brand mention density, video transcripts, and review profiles, Perplexity rewards freshness and structure because it searches live, and Google AI Overviews draw heavily on structured signals. Check each one separately. A single blended score will hide where you are actually losing.
