Other people normally cannot see what you ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or another AI system. Your conversations are not automatically public. However, someone may be able to access them if they control your account, device, workplace network or AI workspace, or if you share the conversation yourself.
Who Might Be Able to See Your AI Activity?
Your AI conversations may be visible to:
Anyone who can sign in to your account
Someone using a shared computer, phone or browser
An administrator who manages your work or school account
An employer using monitoring software on a company device
The company operating the AI service, subject to its privacy policy
Anyone who receives a shared conversation link
Authorities who obtain the information through a valid legal request
The exact level of access depends on the AI service, type of account and device being used.
Can Your Employer See What You Ask AI?
Possibly.
If you use a personal AI account on your own device and personal internet connection, your employer normally cannot see the questions you ask.
That changes when you use:
A company computer
A company phone
A work network
A company browser profile
An AI account provided by your employer
Workplace monitoring or security software
An employer may only see that you visited an AI website. With more extensive monitoring, it may be able to record what you typed, uploaded or received.
Private browsing does not prevent workplace monitoring. It mainly stops the browser from saving certain information locally after the private window is closed.
Can Other Users See Your AI Searches?
AI conversations are generally private to the account that created them. Other ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini users cannot search for your name and find your private conversation history.
A conversation can become visible if you create a sharing link, copy it into a public post or allow another person to use your account. Anyone with access to a shared link may be able to read the conversation included with it.
Before sharing a conversation, check whether it contains names, business information, uploaded documents or earlier messages that you did not intend to disclose.
Can the AI Company See Your Conversations?
The company operating the AI service stores and processes at least some information about your activity. Under certain circumstances, authorized personnel or service providers may be able to review conversations for security, support, abuse prevention, legal compliance or product improvement.
The rules differ between personal, business, team and enterprise accounts. They can also change when you adjust your data controls.
This is why an AI conversation should not be treated like a confidential discussion with a lawyer, doctor or other professional who is legally required to protect your information.
Avoid entering:
Passwords
Social Security numbers
Financial account numbers
Private medical records with identifying information
Confidential customer information
Trade secrets
Sensitive company documents
Does Deleting AI History Make It Private?
Deleting a conversation can remove it from the history shown in your account, but it may not mean every copy disappears immediately from the company’s systems.
Retention periods and deletion practices vary by platform. If privacy is the concern, read the service’s current policy and review its data controls.

Can a Business See What Someone Asked AI About It?
Usually, no.
If someone asks ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini about your business, you do not receive the question or the answer. The conversation happens inside that person’s account.
Your website analytics might show that a visitor arrived from ChatGPT or another AI platform. It does not reveal the private prompt that led the visitor to your site. You can learn more about that distinction in How to check if it is from ChatGPT.
This creates a blind spot for business owners. Someone can ask AI about your company, receive an inaccurate answer and decide not to contact you. You would not know the conversation happened.

AI searches and conversations are not normally visible to the public. They may still be accessible to people who control your device, account, workplace system or shared link, as well as the company operating the AI service under certain conditions.
The safest rule is simple: do not enter information into an AI system that would cause serious harm if someone else eventually saw it.
