AI Search Engine Audit for Plumbers

AI Search Engine Audit for Plumbers

Someone with a leaking water heater, backed up sewer line, burst pipe, or clogged drain does not necessarily begin by searching through plumbing company websites. They can ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude what the problem might be, whether it requires a plumber, and which plumbing companies they should consider.

What do those AI systems understand about your plumbing company when that happens?

The Frank Masotti AI Business Understanding Report is a $495 manual analysis designed to answer that question. I evaluate your plumbing business across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude to see how the three systems understand your company, what services they associate with it, what they leave out, where they disagree, and how your company appears when AI is asked questions relevant to potential customers.

For a plumber, that can reveal much more than whether an AI system recognizes the company name.

What Does AI Understand About Your Plumbing Company?

A plumbing company can look simple from the outside. You are a plumber.

That description is almost useless to someone who needs a specific plumbing service.

A homeowner looking for someone to replace a water heater has a different need from a property manager looking for commercial plumbing service. A customer with a clogged kitchen drain is different from someone dealing with a damaged sewer line. Someone with water coming through the ceiling at midnight has an entirely different concern.

For AI to accurately represent a plumbing company, it may need to understand distinctions such as:

  • Residential or commercial plumbing
  • Emergency plumbing services
  • Drain cleaning
  • Sewer inspection, repair, or replacement
  • Water heater repair and installation
  • Tankless water heater services
  • Leak detection
  • Pipe repair and repiping
  • Fixture and toilet repair
  • Garbage disposal services
  • Gas line services, where offered
  • Remodeling or new construction plumbing
  • The cities and communities the company actually serves

Not every plumber provides all of these services.

That is exactly why the distinction matters.

An AI system that broadly understands that your company is a plumber can still misunderstand what kind of plumbing work you actually perform.

A Plumber Can Be Recognized and Still Be Misunderstood

Suppose your company has spent years building a strong reputation for sewer and drain work.

ChatGPT might correctly associate you with sewer line repair. Gemini might describe you primarily as a general residential plumber. Claude might recognize your company but say little about drain or sewer services.

Those are three different interpretations of the same business.

The same problem can occur with emergency plumbing.

If you provide genuine emergency service, does AI understand that? If you do not offer 24 hour service, could information elsewhere cause a model to imply that you do?

Either misunderstanding matters.

A customer facing a plumbing emergency is not simply asking, “Is this a plumbing company?”

They may be asking:

“Who can fix a burst pipe near me?”

“Which plumber handles sewer backups?”

“Who repairs tankless water heaters?”

“Can this plumbing company come out after normal business hours?”

“Who should I call for a leaking water heater?”

Your company can be accurately categorized as a plumber while AI still gives an incomplete answer to the question the customer actually cares about.

Your Service Area Is Part of the Answer

Plumbing is usually a service area business.

Your office address does not necessarily define where you work.

A plumbing company might be located in one city while regularly serving customers throughout several surrounding cities and communities. That creates another question for an AI search engine audit:

Does AI understand where your plumbers actually provide service?

If one model associates your company almost exclusively with the city in your mailing address while another understands the broader service area, those systems may reach different conclusions when someone asks for a plumber in a nearby community.

The reverse can also happen. Old location information or overly broad associations could make a plumbing company appear relevant somewhere it no longer serves.

That is not simply an address issue. It is part of how AI interprets the business.

I have written separately about what happens when a business moves but its old location remains online because outdated geographic information can continue influencing how a business is understood.

For a plumber whose customers expect someone to come to them, geography deserves particular attention.

What Happens When Someone Asks AI to Recommend a Plumber?

Recognition and recommendation are not the same thing.

An AI system might know your plumbing company exists without mentioning it when someone asks for a recommendation.

That creates a different set of questions.

What happens when someone asks for a plumber in your service area?

What happens when the request becomes more specific?

Does the answer change for an emergency plumber, water heater specialist, sewer repair company, or commercial plumber?

Does AI associate your company with characteristics that could influence the recommendation?

Does it appear confident about what your company does?

Does another plumbing company appear instead?

Current independent testing illustrates why the question is worth examining. In an August 2026 test of 1,702 plumbers across 26 U.S. metro areas, researchers asked ChatGPT four differently phrased recommendation questions in each market. Only 28% of the plumbers included in the test appeared in at least one response.

That does not mean 72% of plumbers are universally invisible to ChatGPT. AI answers can change, and one test cannot establish that.

It does demonstrate something more useful: asking an AI system about plumbers can produce a selective set of company recommendations, and changing the question can change which companies appear.

That is why I separate AI recognition from AI recommendation.

Knowing that ChatGPT has heard of your plumbing company does not tell you what happens when a potential customer asks whom it would recommend.

Different Plumbing Questions Can Produce Different Pictures of Your Company

There is no single AI answer that defines how a plumbing company is understood.

Consider the difference between these questions:

“Tell me about ABC Plumbing.”

“Does ABC Plumbing repair sewer lines?”

“Who installs tankless water heaters in this area?”

“Which plumbers handle commercial properties?”

“Who would you recommend for an emergency plumbing problem?”

“Is ABC Plumbing a good choice for drain cleaning?”

Each question gives the model a different reason to retrieve, interpret, compare, and explain information about the business.

This is one reason simply opening ChatGPT and asking about your company once tells you very little.

As I explain in Why Can’t I Just Ask ChatGPT Myself?, a single question to one model is an anecdote. The useful information comes from examining the responses systematically and comparing what multiple models conclude.

Three AI Systems May See Three Different Plumbing Companies

The Frank Masotti AI Business Understanding Report evaluates ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude because there is no reason to assume all three systems understand your plumbing company identically.

One might have a detailed understanding of your services.

Another might omit an important specialty.

Another might associate the company with outdated information.

They may disagree about your service area, attributes, specialties, or whether your company is relevant to particular recommendation questions.

That disagreement is information.

My AI Business Understanding Report methodology explains how I preserve the model responses and manually compare what the three systems understand.

There is no automated visibility score and no software scanner deciding whether your plumbing company “passes.”

I read the answers.

I compare them.

I look for agreements, disagreements, omissions, misunderstandings, recognition patterns, recommendation visibility, associated attributes, outdated information, and interpretation drift.

Then I explain what the findings mean for the business.

What Your Plumbing Company Receives

The Frank Masotti AI Business Understanding Report costs $495 as a one time purchase.

You receive a 10+ page PDF report covering the manual analysis of your business across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.

The report examines what the models understand about your plumbing company, what appears missing or incorrect, where the models agree and disagree, the attributes associated with your business, recognition and recommendation visibility, and other findings uncovered during the analysis.

I also provide strategic observations and recommendations based on what I find.

The completed report is delivered the next business day after I finish the analysis.

This is diagnosis, not an optimization service.

I do not sell you SEO, GEO, AEO, AI visibility implementation, or an ongoing marketing retainer after producing the report. The purpose is to give you evidence of how three major AI systems currently understand your company so you can decide what deserves attention.

You can also see completed AI Business Understanding Reports to understand the depth and format of the analysis.

Do ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude Actually Understand Your Plumbing Company?

You probably know exactly what kind of plumbing company you operate.

You know which services make you money. You know which jobs you want. You know where your plumbers travel. You know whether you handle emergency calls, sewer work, commercial properties, water heaters, remodels, or the everyday plumbing problems your customers call about.

The unanswered question is whether AI understands the same business you do.

ChatGPT may have one interpretation.

Gemini may have another.

Claude may have another.

Until you look, you do not know.

The Frank Masotti AI Business Understanding Report gives you that answer through a manual analysis of all three systems for $495 one time.
