AI Search Engine Audit by Frank Masotti

AI search is changing how people learn about businesses.

A potential customer can now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or another AI system about a company before ever visiting its website. They can ask what the business does, whether it is legitimate, what it is known for, how it compares with competitors, who it serves, and whether it should be considered for a specific need.

The answers they receive depend on what the AI system currently understands about that business.

An AI Search Engine Audit examines that understanding.

I manually evaluate how major AI models interpret a business, what they associate with it, what they leave out, where they disagree, and whether they recognize the company in relevant recommendation situations.

For a deeper explanation of the concept itself, read What Is an AI Search Engine Audit?

This is not an automated scan and it is not a traditional SEO audit.

It is an analysis of the business as AI currently understands it.

How I Approach an AI Search Engine Audit

I evaluate businesses manually across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.

The purpose is not to generate a generic visibility score.

The purpose is to see what the models actually say.

That includes how they describe the company, what category they place it in, what attributes they associate with it, what services or products they recognize, and whether the three models form a consistent picture of the business.

I also look for differences between them.

One model may understand the company clearly while another leaves out important information. A model may recognize the business but misunderstand what makes it different. It may associate the company with the wrong category, fail to recognize part of its offering, or describe it in a way the business itself would not use.

My AI Business Understanding Report methodology explains how I evaluate the models independently, preserve their original responses, and manually compare what they understand about a business.

Those differences matter because people increasingly use AI to help decide which businesses deserve further consideration.

What I Look For

An AI Search Engine Audit can examine areas such as:

  • How AI describes the business
  • What category the business is associated with
  • What products or services the models recognize
  • Which attributes AI associates with the company
  • What information is missing
  • Where the models disagree
  • Whether important details are misunderstood
  • How consistently the business is represented across models
  • Whether the company appears in relevant recommendation situations
  • How AI explains the business when compared with competitors
  • Whether the models appear confident or uncertain about the company

The goal is to understand the current interpretation before deciding what, if anything, should change.

Why AI Understanding Matters

A business website explains the company from the company’s point of view.

AI does not simply repeat that website.

It forms its own interpretation from the information available to it.

That interpretation can influence what a potential customer learns before reaching the website at all.

Someone may ask which businesses provide a certain service.

They may ask whether a company is appropriate for their situation.

They may ask how two companies compare.

They may ask whether a business is established, specialized, local, reputable, expensive, affordable, experienced, or suitable for a particular type of customer.

If AI has an incomplete or inaccurate understanding of the business, those answers can also be incomplete or inaccurate.

As more people use an artificial intelligence search engine to research companies, those interpretations can influence which businesses they consider before they ever visit a website.

That is why I believe diagnosis should come before prescription.

Before trying to improve how AI understands a business, it makes sense to find out what it currently understands.

The Frank Masotti AI Business Understanding Report

My AI Search Engine Audit is delivered through the Frank Masotti AI Business Understanding Report.

The report is a $495 one time manual analysis of what ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude currently understand about a business.

I compare the three models and document the important agreements, disagreements, omissions, misunderstandings, attributes, recognition patterns, and recommendation behavior I find.

The report also includes strategic observations and practical next steps based on the analysis.

There is no automated scanner involved.

There is no recurring subscription.

There is no software dashboard.

Each business is evaluated individually.

You can read more about how the report works, review completed AI Business Understanding Reports, or see exactly what you are buying.

The completed report is delivered as a PDF, usually the next business day.

One Business. Three AI Models. One Manual Analysis.

AI systems do not always describe the same business the same way.

That is why I do not rely on a single model.

ChatGPT may recognize something Gemini misses.

Gemini may associate the business with attributes Claude does not.

Claude may explain the company more accurately than either of the others.

The differences are part of the analysis.

The objective is to build a clearer picture of how the business is currently understood across major AI systems rather than treating one answer from one model as definitive.

You can read more about why I use three AI models.

Manual Analysis, Not an Automated AI Audit

Automated systems can collect large amounts of data quickly.

That is not what I am selling.

I read the responses myself, compare the models, identify the patterns, and write the conclusions.

There is no automated score attempting to reduce AI understanding to a single number.

If you want a more detailed comparison, read How Does This Differ From an Automated AI SEO Report?

AI Search Engine Audits by Business Type

Different industries create different AI search situations.

Different AI searches can also produce different descriptions, comparisons, and recommendations depending on how the question is asked and what the model understands about the business.

Someone looking for a medical practice asks different questions than someone looking for a financial advisor, law firm, insurance agency, real estate brokerage, auto repair shop, or payday lender.

For that reason, I publish individual AI Search Engine Audit articles for specific business types.

Each article looks at the kinds of questions potential customers may ask AI about that type of business and the kinds of interpretation problems that can matter in that industry.
